I found what is possibly the easiest way into the locked graveyard section in Tracing the Courier: using only one crate, so you avoid having to sneak under a mechanist's nose, or spend ages scouring the level for crates. Here's how.
Opposite the tomb with the portal in it is a row of six tombstones along the wall. Drop the crate onto the tombstone at the very end, under the light. Now go to the other corner- the two tombstones there are on a little grassy mound. Jump onto the narrow ledge on the wall, and onto the end tombstone. Now run along the row of tombstones; if you do it right you won't fall off. Jump onto the crate, onto the light and over the wall.

Forget I even started.

Never tried that. I am playing through (albeit slowly) at this time, so when I get there I am going to try and figure out your suggestion if, for nothing else, curiosity's sake.

Using a crate you can also reach the portal before the pagan has even left the cemetery. Just climb onto a tombstone, jump up and throw the crate down so you are standing on top of it and then jump over the wall. This can be done without a crate, but you have to position yourself just right or you'll just slide off the wall. And of course you have to be invisible or else the pagan will spot you.
