I think the Sony and Microsoft have just forgotten what makes consoles great. Simply upgrading the graphics each generation and tacking on more fancy hardware isn't enough. They need to actually think of what new and original feature they can do(the Wii with it's motion controls for example). And looking at the sales figures,I'm not surprised that the Wii has sold the most units of the three(despite the majority of games being family games).
Seeing as you seem to think that innovation in the form of original features is the key to consoles, what were the innovative features of the consoles prior to the wii? It seems that upgrading graphics and hardware has been the driving force behind every new generation of consoles.
Although I think dethtoll whines way too much about people misspelling his name, you really don't seem to making any salient points here.

And that makes such a difference /sarcasm. Although netplay is a good idea why in the world are they trying to make the consoles into PCs(if people want a PC they can just buy a PC). It certainly seems to be heading that way.
Well they aren't PC's, you dolt. Learn to understand the perks of closed platforms on fixed hardware specifications. This is part of the allure of consoles (and Macs), they just work.
A lot of people desire a Media Centre which is streamlined and simple to use, yet with powerful capabilities. Also what the fuck is wrong with inheriting some of the perks the PC environment, minus the pitfalls such as hardware and software conflicts? No longer does a product console game have to remain buggy, they can be patched.

What have they forgotten? Xbox 360 and PS3 are still mighty fine games platforms. They've just recognised that segments of their audience desire more than just a dedicated games machine, such being a definitive lounge entertainment hub. Hence the PS3 PVR addon software (sold in Europe), DVD/Blu-ray film playback, MP3 playback... Sony for one had been working towards this since the PS2 days.
One of the big innovations of the current gen consoles is recognising the
importance of COMMUNITY.-Cooperative play is the big thing now.
-Things such as Achievements and Trophies encourage competition.
-Both platforms offer integrated friend's lists with IM'ing and voice chat, the ability to invite friends matches or join their existing games, having a Matchmaking MP infrastructure.
Also have entirely slept through Little Big Planet phenomena? "The game's slogan is Play. Create, Share." Sharing of user-created levels, cooperative play, social networking-esque feedback systems of aforementioned user-generated content.
Again this is a lot of this is all old hat for PCs, BUT with the benefits of being on a closed development platform, with fixed hardware specifications.

Yes, this is why all of the traditional game genres such as the First Person Shooter, 3rd person action, RPG (etc), sports simulation are bigger now than ever. Titles such as Gears of War, Halo, Final Fantasy, Madden and FIFA sell millions of copies.

Yeah, they had the Genesis. But look at all their failures:Master System, GameGear, Saturn, Dreamcast. Just my opinion on MS vs SEGA anyway.

I would hardly call the Master System, Game Gear and Dreamcast failures. And anyway, that's not the point. You argued that Sega was irrelevant, and I'm saying that is a grossly inaccurate assessment. Sega was perfectly relevant until they went third party. Or maybe you don't remember the slitting of wrists when they announced they weren't going to make hardware anymore?
gunsmoke on 2/5/2009 at 19:11
Well, like I said, just my opinion. Obviously I am mistaken. Honestly, I am horribly biased. I hate SEGA w/apassion.

Sega hasn't been a very good game developer in years. They kind of shat themselves with Sonic Adventure and the Dreamcast and it went downhill from there.
SubJeff on 3/5/2009 at 00:30
Yeah but gunsmoke is still wrong about how relevant they were. From 8 to 32 bit they were as relevant as you can get.
gunsmoke on 3/5/2009 at 02:21
Hardware.

Sega still puts out some good stuff. Occasionally. Valkyria Chronicles was nice, and the Virtua Fighters haven't lost much over the years. But for the most part, you're right. I miss the old days of the original Sonics, the Shining games, the Panzer Dragoons, or hell, even the Oasis series. Just about everything they put out back had that special Sega shine.
I'm still holding out hope that, sooner or later, they'll makes an about face and starts giving us tons of good stuff again.
