Some minor problems with sound with some games though.

Just play em on pc via emulation. 99.9% of ps1 games work, and give or take 65% of ps2 games work. Thats me taking a total guess ofcourse, but based on testing of games over time.

Do any of the Europeans here have an idea how easy it is to get a US-import PS3 without paying an arm and a leg?

Wouldn't the powersource be problem? USA has 110 volt right?

every good PSU can be switched. at least the PC ones can be......but then again that's a console and they wanna defend their different markets.....like region code :)

@Fragony: From what I've read, you have a transformer (or whatever they're called) that accepts something like 100-240 volt. Chances are they have a separate cable that goes from the transformer to the socket, and those are different from country to country. Getting one of those shouldn't be too difficult.
@mothra: Concerning region code, I'm pretty sure I've read a number of times that PS3 games aren't region coded, i.e. you should be able to play a game on any machine, regardless of where you bought it. There might be issues with PAL and NTSC, for all I know, but it should be possible to circumvent those with the right TV.

This is correct.
Edit: I found a few conflicting answers but the general consensus online seems to be as set out (
http://www.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_posts.php?thread_id=70907) here, namely:
Quote:
* Works with UK power supply (no step-down needed, just a regular PC/Kettle plug)
* Blu Ray films ARE region encoded
* PS3 Games are NOT region coded
* PS1 & PS2 games ARE region coded
* Need a US address to register online (download demos etc)
Also, be aware that for multiplayer games there appears to be a (
http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=54680) problem whereby US games can't see UK games to play against each other and vice versa.

Let's break it down:-
* PS3 game playback is 100% region free.
* Some PS3 games have had their online Multiplayer component region locked, such as Motorstorm, some EA games.
* Blu-ray, DVD movie and PS1 game playback are region locked.
* Every models up until at least the first lot of 40GB SKUs have universal voltage PSUs. Anything beyond that I'm not certain of.
* North American/Asian 60GB + 20GB models have 100% hardware-based PS2 game playback.
* European 60GB + North American/Asian 80GB rely partially on emulation, since they removed the Emotion Engine CPU.
* 40GB and newer models were completely stripped off all PS2 hardware, hence no back compat.

My friend has a USA, UK, Hong Kong and Japan account. I have an Irish euro account and a UK one.
Purpose being mainly to do with the psn store options since europeans are getting shafted everywhere. As far as I know you can base your account anywhere you want.
