This is a direct quote:
Quote:
"Now that we're at a point where we're three years into the lifecycle of the PS3," he told us earlier today, "there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]".
"And it's not just like 50 or 60 percent. It's well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3."

Which makes sense. After all, I wouldn't buy a console for a function it doesn't have...
Thanks for the quote, SE.

I know! I was surprised my gravatar wasn't something gormless-looking, personally.

I am not interested in a console, but I want to buy a blu-ray player. Considering an average player is still about $250, I might decide to pay $50 more and get a PS3 instead. So yes, Sony is "getting it". (although I must admit I think $50 is still a bit high for a console, so I'm not sure if I'll go with the player only or the PS3.)
I'm in a somewhat similar position, but I think the flexibility in updating the PS3 to potentially accommodate newer BD profiles (such as the jump from Profile 1.0 to BD-Live that has already taken place on the PS3) will probably swing my vote that way.

<Sony> People buy the PS3 for PS3 games, not to play PS2 games. Suck it.
Ehhh. I'd prefer a PS2-capable console, but I'd only be using a couple of games on it anyway, like Rez and Ico. For a reduced-price PS3 I could probably make that sacrifice.

TBH if you MUST have PS2 compatibility then get a PS3 slim and a PS2. PS2s are about £70 new and you get get deals on them for new ones at less than £50.
Matthew don't forget that the PS3 can also serve media from your PC, wirelessly, to your TV. And if you want to splash out on PlayTV you can get Freeview through it which is recordable to the HD.

That's definitely true, although I think that many people - me included - would rather not add yet another device to all the ones they've already got. TV, hifi, DVD player, PS2, VCR (for those things we still have on video), set-top box for digital TV... If there was a choice, I'd very much prefer substituting one machine for another. If there's no choice, tough luck, obviously. It won't keep me from getting a PS3 at this point.

Err, you list PS2 in there. Why do you need BC if you already have one?
I understand the want for a single item that does it all though. I'd like to be able to record TV on the PS3 through a Bravia TV without needing the PlayTV add-on. One thing I like about the PS3 is the number of functions - BluRay/DVD player, games console, potential TV recorder and media connectivity from the PC.

As I wrote: I'd prefer substituting one device to adding a device due to space considerations. (With the 550+ DVDs and big TV, my girlfriend already feels like the living room is actually my room... :cheeky:)

I'm hoping that I'll be able to set the PS3 to DVD-region free so I can at least get rid of my DVD player. I hear that the PS3's DVD upscaling is pretty good.

How about some advice and speculations, guys? I just saw a broken 40GB PS3 Fat for £100, and the owner
claims all it needs is a new HDD. Now, a quick look and Amazon lists PS3 compatible Western Digital hard drives for ~£40 a 250GiB pop. That would bring around my desired cheapskate level, however, I suspect it's also coming without the controller, in which case it shoots past that and straight into Don't Care land.
But I suppose what I'm circling here is how do you see the market for second-hand PS3s evolving? My guess is that if the new Slim units are being sold now for £250, around Christmas they should start popping up second-hand for £200. At which point I think we might see working old PS3 models being sold for even as low as £150.
P.S. On an unrelated note, and if anyone here cares, it appears that one thing did get cut from the PS3 Slim - (
http://kotaku.com/5340314/ps3-slim-rip-linux-os) no more Linux support. At least officially.

Indeed, though as my TV is right beside my PC that is less of a benefit than one might suspect. :p Edit: though I could carry it up to the other TV and stream various programmes that family members demand that I get for them.
