I realise now that you really would choose one system over another, regardless of price difference, feature difference, game availability and whatever else because you like one controller over another.
While it doesn't impact my console choice, I would back him up that a controller makes a big deal as it is your primary means of interacting with the console. I much prefer the left analog stick placement on the GameCube and Xbox/Xbox 360 controllers over the lower position on the DualShocks, even though I still ended up with a PS3 over the 360 due to already having a good PC for the games I wanted.
I'm still considering picking up the 360 controller for PC gaming though.

I just Installed Ubuntu on my PS3. without having to hack or modify anything not readily available to me.
Despite its shortcomings, thats a pretty cool feature.

since there are much, much cheaper Blu-ray players out there.
The cheapest Blu-Ray player I found was $199 at Wal-Mart (Canada). This is an old Samsung, with no possibility for updates, and reviews says the image quality, among other things, is plain bad. Next, there are a few players at $249 (Sony, Samsung and LG). None is great, but they are somewhat acceptable. After that, for a good player, prices go a lot higher than the $299 of the PS3. So no, there are no "much, much cheaper Blu-ray players", at least not in Canada. This is really between a not so good $249 or a $299 PS3. Problem is, I have no idea what the PS3 is worth as a player.
As for why I'm posting here, read my first message in this thread and you'll understand.

Apparently you can no longer install 3rd party OSes (i.e. Lunix) onto the Slim.

Yeah we've had that one already. Its the only feature it has lost I think. Who used it anyway? A tiny minority I'm sure. Not that it wasn't a nice feature mind.

It didn't have direct access to the GPU (hardware acceleration), so 3D stuff and HD movies were slower than fuck. Having a homebrew media player (that could play the popular open source video/audio formats) or being able to crank some of the old Id Software shooters would've been cool, but it couldn't do any of that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the exception of cheap devices, I think all players can have firmware update to do that sort of things.
To an extent, but I understand that the PS3 was the only Blu-Ray device originally released as a Profile 1.0 player that was able to be upgraded to a Profile 2.0 player. Whether that's due to extra hardware being required I'm not sure, but it would suggest to me that if, say, a Profile 3.0 ever came out then the PS3 would be more likely to be upgradeable than other players.

6 sub £250 players there.
The PS3 is 299$CDN (338$CDN with taxes as I live in Québec). At the current exchange rate, that's about £165 (£187 with taxes).
