Getting outsold 2:1 by your competitor is hardly good enough for any company that plans on staying in business. They need to do something.
True. But when the competition sold at least one unit to...like olol...everybody ever, selling to half that isn't exactly a bad thing. It's more than enough for it to be considered successful to everyone but the brand name mouthbreathers.
The only problems I see for the PSP2 is that it's practically repeating the things that hurt the PSP1 the most when it came up against the DS. Those being price and the battery.
The thing is going to be expensive, no doubt. On a guess, I'd say it'll start at about $400-500. Even the 3DS at $250 is a little on the expensive side for this market. If it's too high, no one will buy it regardless of the hardware it's sporting underneath the hood. Unless Sony plans on undercutting themselves by at least half, it'll be a PSP1 at best, or a PSP Go at worst.
And the battery life? I'd be absolutely shocked if something as powerful and small as what they're showing here will be able to hold a charge for more than 2-3 hours of playtime. Hell, even the 3DS is a little weak on this front. Not a good thing now that we live in the days of tech geeks expecting 5-10 hours of battery life out of all their hardware.
Other than those concerns, it's a snazzy little device. I won't be grabbing one soon after release like I did the old PSP, but I'll keep an eye out on it and see if any interesting games get thrown its way.

From what I'm reading...
(

The only real worry for me was the type of storage media. Even in this day & age, I still like owning a physical copy of everything. But it sounds like Sony is going Nintendo's route with actual cartridges instead of disc-based media like the UMD.
I'm not entirely sold on the new hand-held just yet... as I'd still like a bit more official confirmation & some more detail concerning the device. But they did get my attention as I'm loving the new design & hardware specs so far.

Actually Renz, people at Sony's conference are reporting 5 1/2 to 7 hours playtime on the test models.
And "analysts" (not that I trust them) are predicting a $350 price. If Sony are serious about taking on the 3DS then $300 would be best. It might be a loss but there would be plenty of people who haven't made their minds up yet who'd think that a $50 difference between the PSP2 and 3DS is a small enough jump for the much more powerful rig.

Whereas the 3DS has about 3 hours (3.5 if you use the dynamic contrast function). Impressive.
As far as the price point, Sony has made it clear that they learned their lesson from the PS3 are not willing to sell the device at a lost.

Sony have been chatting about battery life and acknowledged that a failing of the PSP was the poor battery life so I think they're taking it seriously. If 5+ hrs isn't enough for you I think it's time to re-evaluate how much time you're spending on your portable since you should be able to charge it overnight or when you're playing at home.

The only time having less than 5 hours of battery really hurts is during long road or plane trips. Any other time? Well, considering the time I usually spend with my DS is during the couple of hours before I go to bed, it isn't that huge of a deal.
Still, people do play these things while they're out and about, and it's good knowing it can hold a fairly substantial charge. An almost surprisingly substantial one, actually. Though I'm still thinking it'll end up being 2-3 hours for gameplay, and 5-7 for old PSP1 titles, or when you're goofing around in the OS.

Yeah all those game journalists are just bullshitters because that's what they do, right?
So Google are REALLY getting into bed with Sony now, eh? There was Google TV and Sony supporting devices and now this PS games on Android thing. It's like a frikking coup. MS and Apple can't do this because they are mortal enemies and there are no other big players out there lols.
It's a shame that I have less and less time to play games because it's getting to be a good time to be the type of gamer/computer geek I would be if I had the chance.
This is what one could do over the next couple of years.
Play games on a PS3 and PSP2 (continuing your PS3 game when you're not at home on your PSP2, natch). Have an Android phone, preferably a Sony Xperia variant, for PS gaming that may or may not link to the PS3 and PSP2 in some way - see PS3 + PSP for the type of thing I'm talking about.
Play PS games on your Android tablet. Have Chrome OS on your netbook which I'll bet is getting some PS integration somehow. Chrome OS on your desktop? Hmmmm, possibly. Hey, aren't Valve suddenly buddies with Sony now? And don't they do that Steamplay thing? Theoretically we could have Valve game running on a Chrome OS client and it wouldn't matter that I got the games on Windows as I'll have them all on Chrome OS via Steamplay/via Windows Steam emulator on Chrome OS.
A Valve, Google, Sony trifecta. Could happen.

We're all bullshitters, if there's enough hookers and blow to go around.
No, I don't believe they're lying, but I do believe they're viewing demos designed to eek the most out of the battery, while showing off what the PSP2 can do. It's Sony's event, and they'll stack the deck in the favor. In the end, I'm thinking it won't last quite as long as advertised once the PSP2 is unleashed outside of a controlled environment.
Think about it. The PSP2 has to sport a small battery by necessity, while being capable of producing near PS3 quality graphics. Even with an OLED screen, flash memory based media, and all the other low power perks the PSP2 has built in, I can't imagine it pushing more than 3 hours during heavy gameplay. Not unless Sony pulled some kind of engineering half-miracle.

Not as near the ps3 as sony wants people to believe though.
They can always and probably will have it clocked down and not running all cores by default.
much like how the psp ran underclocked by default.
