While I am against PC-ness and do dabble in "offensive
humour" as long as its legitimately funny, I have been increasingly starting to agree that there are times when saying something is simply a no-no.
non-racist example, lets say you are attendning a friend's mother funeral. Making "your mom" joke at that time would be a little... ill-timed. Though, I think it's not so much reflection on the joke/humor or the words, but rather, a reflection on you as a person, for choosing a time of your friends extreme emotional vulnerability and sort of poking at the reason that leads to their grief. It's not so much being PC, as just being a caring and respectful to your fellow friend/human.
But then there are people who just freak out at stuff like a your mom joke / n-word / etc. at any situation
just because you used that word. And that, I do agree, is just stupid.

Sites like reddit are set up in such a way that it is much, much harder to get to know the personalities of others.
It's almost exactly like dems says-it's all so atomic.
Indeed; part of the appeal of reddit, 4chan, digg etc. is the near anonymous nature of it. "Share your thoughts without fear of being judged." It's both a good and bad thing for various reasons, and I wouldn't discredit it. It's good to have those kind of spaces.

n-word
Oh ffs. You are describing a situation, you are not CALLING someone a nigger. You are not being racist.
Grow some goddamn balls man.
This is exactly everything that is wrong with political correctness. It's like some weird newspeak.
"Did you h-word that b-word c-worded v-word with an m-word?"
Soon "racist" is going to be the fraking "r-word".

You're too dumb to understand why you're being dumb.

Yeah, but he, much like you, does not have N-Word Privileges. To which I mean... it's just not proper to use the full word in public conversation like this, regardless of context and usage. I get that you're wealthy and white and live in well-to-do Pops-Monocle (Please Drive Carefully) in good old gentrified Fuckshire county, but that doesn't excuse you from having to at least be aware of how much of a
loaded word it is, outside of its superficial offensive qualities.
SubJeff on 24/11/2012 at 11:00
I grew up in Africa so I'm perfectly aware of how loaded the word is, far more than you I daresay.
And quit with the uninformed ad hominem. Play the ball, not the man.

I think the biggest problem with this blog is that 99.9% of racists aren't going to give a shit if you call them out on it.

Are you serious? This is beyond ridiculous and it's a testament to how much of a bugaboo the word has become. Is there any other word that is treated with such fear? I'd laugh but it's gone beyond laughing and crying back around to just... incredulous gawking at the mind-numbing idiocy of this all.
"N-Word Privileges" - that the hell is this? Where do I apply for one of these? I can't believe such a term exists.
Look, I understand that certain words are "taboo", that they cause great offence - and I totally agree that there are words that by their usage, connotation and pure sound and descriptive nature should be deemed offensive. Cunt is in many ways, top of the list for me. It's just so base and iirc even the British Board of Film Certification used to have a special place for it above fuck, twat or shit. I'd never use it in normal conversation, just like I'd never use nigger in normal conversation.
But if you are discussing the use of any of these words you should not have to pussyfoot around them. Do you think that in the BBFC rules about what constitutes sexual or adult language they have a list that is just:
C*nt
F*ck
N*gger
?
Do you?
It's one thing to not use a word in an offensive way and quite another to use it other ways.
fett's use of nigger was to expose the nonsense of the racist accusation, not to insult anyone, not cause offence. It was a demonstration of the
lack of racism in the forum and yet somehow that is a bad thing because he doesn't have "N-Word Privileges"?
I'm not a racist in any way at all. I'm the exact opposite and I know for a fact I've been called nigger many more times than you dethtoll because despite your assertions I am not white, I am mixed European-Middle Eastern and my mother is darker skinned than Barack Obama who is labelled as black. In the 80s and early 90s in my northern English town my brother and I were the darkest mofos on the streets with the curliest blackest hair, especially as for most of the year we were living in Africa and so were tanned to a fine shine. And back in Africa we were obviously minorities and moreso than the rest of the expats since I was the only Jew in school, something I've had more fights about than you've have coherent thoughts. In my school all the black kids called each other nigger all the white kids were called honkeys and, and this will blow your mind,
everyone called everyone these things and no one batted an eyelid. The words were essentially nullified as racist terms,
unless someone used them in a racist context.
So fuck you and you word-play bugaboo bullshit. You don't know anything about being a minority, about the offensiveness of words and the appropriateness of their use.

Clearly not, at least not in the United States. But whatever. You know, I've poked fun at you with the "rich white European" thing before, why are you only just now bringing all this up? But even more to the point, I don't think one person gets to claim to be an authority on what words are offensive or not, regardless of skin color.
And for the record, while I may be too white for a Skynard concert, I
am disabled, which is entirely a new layer of marginalization. But go ahead and ignore that, too, like you always do.
SubJeff on 25/11/2012 at 12:03
You know, I'm perfectly empathetic to your disability which you should know based on some of my past posts and I expect that due to it you do have a more personal insight into minority issues.
Why the hell should I have to talk about my ethnic background in relation to your "rich white European" misconception? I've told you I'm not white in response to it before anyway.
I'm not claiming to be an authority on what words are offensive, nor have I said that nigger isn't an offensive word - it absolutely is. But you know what will surprise you? Talking to a black friend of yours about it, whilst using it in a non name calling way. You're not saying "hey nigger", you're saying "I want to talk about the word nigger". They may be shocked to hear you say the word at first but I've never encountered anyone who was offended by me using the word in a non-racist manner. One guy did say it was odd to hear me even say the word, but we discussed it and of course it was fine because my friends are not irrational assholes and are able to understand what I have been saying itt; a word, itself, cannot be taboo to say at all, and that context is everything.
SubJeff on 25/11/2012 at 12:21
Dude, you're not my friend and your "joke" isn't funny. If dethtoll had said that I'd have smiled. But you?
Fuck off.
