Thank you Lazarus411 for finally making this thread too stupid to continue with, so I have an out.

Just ignore him, man. Ain't no thang. We can still continue, even if it's just you saying "hey Sub, I get what you mean, I was feeling whitemanfear with regards to the N-word and dumbasses where I live would be all heeeeelll-nay you din't pop pop pop if I tried that shit here". I'd understand, truly, because I'm a goddamn humanitarian.

This was supposed to be a discussion about how to deal with racism appropriately. You turned it into your personal fight to be able to say "nigger" again, without fear of being called racist.
Apparently you think this is the more important problem. For the same reason you cannot see how talking about "niggers" could be hurtful to others. Or why it shouldn't be their duty to come up to you and ask:
"Dear Sir, I heard you use the term nigger and I'm sure you meant no harm. But I just wanted to know in which exact context and with which meaning you used that term, please."
Would that even be a usable solution? Wouldn't it foreseeably lead to countless degrading situations for blacks being obviously lied to and ridiculed? Wouldn't it be a perfect shield for a racism that hides in plain view?
Who knows. You don't seem to care anyway. What you care about is your freedom of speech. So you refuse to say the N-word and will argue the toss with anyone who challenges you on it.
You really think that is an attitude worth defending, don't you? Well pad yourself on the back. Today here on this internet, you fought bravely for your own abused rights.

What the fuuuuck??? You said "nigger" yourself (oops and now I said it too, therefore I must be racist!?), Kolya, and quotation marks don't change it magically into some other word.
YOU ALL KNOW THE CONTEXT! It's right here in the thread, and if even I can't find any way to misunderstand it as veiled racism, how can anyone else?

I'm actually with SubjEff on this to be honest and have no qualms saying nigger in non insulting manner. In my original post (which seems to have triggered this debate) I actually chose n word instead as somewhat illustrative of the issue but I admit my intention wasn't communicated well.
I don't think there is any privilege card or status that would allow one to say stuff like nigger chink cracker or another racial slur of your choice but it is true some people are far less likely to be judged or discredited when they say it, like blacks themselves, which I think was dethtolls point.

Conversations are not limited to internet forums where context can easily be retraced. SubjectiveEffect illustrated his point with a situation where someone would overhear the word in someone else's conversation, in other words talking in public. That's what I referred to. A situation where you might hurt someone elses feelings and put the burden of prove on them. I think I made that quite clear. But go ahead and have your little "haha you said it yourself" moment.

I'll humour your twittery this time Koyla, because I'm a nice guy like that and despite our misunderstandings and your obtuseness I think you're okay.
I don't think it's okay to use nigger all the time because it
is an offensive word and it you are quite correct - if someone overheard me it would then be on them to find out what the context is and I don't think that entirely fair nor practical.
But -
if I
am using it, in a non-racist manner, for some reason then what exactly is the problem with that? I'd be discreet, probably have the conversation in private or in hushed tones. It's not like I'll be shouting it out for all to hear. And I should be allowed to do that. This may be an open forum but we pretty much all know each other here and we all would have know what fett meant in that post (refer to fett's post itt that triggered this discussion).
This is an illustration of both the kind of situation in which one might use the word in a legitimate non-racist manner, and also of the ridiculous hysteria I'm so against. Remember before you go in, Curb Your Enthusiasm is a situational comedy which at its core is all about Larry getting himself into trouble, usually through no fault of his own:

I can't decide whether to laugh or just hate you more.

I think what SE is trying to say is that as long as the word has significant connotations, we won't be able to move past it. He's not saying white people should be allowed to say it, he's saying that maybe we should all just drop it.
Kolya on 25/11/2012 at 22:13
I've seen that clip before, because I'm a nice guy and care a bit about your context, SE. The use of "nigger" you described in the last post is a-okay with me.
That clip not so much. It turns the victim/perpetrator relation around by depicting a whimpy well-meaning white guy and a hulking black dude who explodes on him.
