Publishers are eying Thief again... - by shadowthief

:(
Yes, it's true... Our baby may again be in danger of being mutilated for the masses all in the name of profit.
This time the culprits may be Bethesda...
So far it's just a rumor, but how long that will last I can't say.
"With Fallout in its pocket and Fallout 3 earning well-deserved hype, what beloved dormant IP is next on Bethesda's shopping list? Whispers inside the studio suggest they'd love to get their hands on Thief..." (October Issue of OXM Pg. 90, Rumor Mole)
Though Bethesda is a great developer and they have been responsible for many great games I've lost faith in them. What they've done to the newest Elder Scrolls game is sad. So many of the things that made The Elder Scrolls amazing were toned down, taken out, shrunk, simplified, made easier, and for no other reason than to sell more copies. Lets not get started on how they started charging for small mods they made...
I wish I could trust Bethesda and I know they still have Emil with them, but what is one man against a vicious machine that is a corporation? I fear even he can not do much when greed gets in the way. I know Ion tried their best at Thief, and they did a really great job but look at all the tweaks and fixes WE, the players, the hardcore Thief fans, had to develop to fix it, and not everything was fixable. Why were most those things there anyways? The Xbox and the desire to sell as many copies as possible.
Now give our baby to a company that has already butchered their own baby for the masses and I don't think its fate will be much brighter...
I don't know my friends... I hope this stays just a rumor...

I reckon it would be great if someone attempted to create a new thief, because it cant hurt, theres a chance they could make a great game, if you don't like it - dont play it! hehe
Altho I do believe that the original, now finished story line (T1-T2-TDS) should not be touched too much, maybe something else in the same universe as the thief series.

I hope it's just a rumor. They can continue their Elder Crap series if they want but better stay off the thief series. Raping fallout with fallout3 is enough and I really don't want more of their shit.

Why not make their own stealth game, and set it in a different universe? Maybe even the modern world, like on that bit of Thief4 concept art. :cheeky: Or another cyberpunk game like Deus Ex. Come on, Bethesda!

Do you sleep naked with your Thief game CD or something? WTF does it matter? Bethesda is a serious developer and obviously someone there is enthusiastic enough to tackle it on - which obviously implies they like its gameplay. The series was NEVER a highly profitable game to begin with, so them making it for profit purposes holds no water. And besides, I fucking
hated Thief 3. I thought it was a vile piece of shit and if it weren't for the Cradle level, would have tossed in the garbage bin before finishing it. Whichever direction Thief takes on from here, it CANNOT be worse than Thief 3 was. Give the guys at Bethesda a chance. We can't all be goddamn cynics around here.

Nice comparison fan boy. It's true - I am a cynic when it comes to Thief 3, but holy shit. How can one not be when confronted by that POS?

You guys realise the lead designer of Fallout 3 is Emil Pagliarulo right?
If Fallout 3 turns out to be as big and openended (and good) as it sounds I could stand to see a Thief game in that engine. MIght deliver that City game we've always wanted.
failure2comply on 29/8/2007 at 13:00
Exactly. Emil I think, has enough creativity and verve to help pull this off - if he isn't already slated to become the lead man behind it that is. i'll reserve cynicism for when I see footage or gameplay - that's IF the rumor is even true to begin with. Personally, I'm hopeful.

So not only do you admit to being a hypocrite, you act like Thief 3 killed your mom? Grow up. Thief 3 was not as good as the first two, but that doesn't mean it's a "piece of shit that should be thrown in the garbage".
