Publishers are eying Thief again... - by shadowthief

Why does he need to "know you"? That idea about becoming a werewolf is exactly what people don't want - it's rubbish, and it's not Thief.
Go back and read my post about character customization - that would be much more acceptable, and much less naff. As you'll see - I agree with the acrobatics idea at least.

If the game was all juiced up I wouldn't be able to play it. One of the major reasons Thief is dear to me is because I can play it in spite of my terrible coordination (not hand/eye coordination, just lacking fine and fast motor control). I can take my time in Thief and quicksave/quickload until I get it right for some of the situations I find pretty tricky. Keep it slow and methodical. Intelligent and thought out. The story's critical. The City as an entity is important. The mood. The music. The voice-acting.
Yeah. I can't be worried about fast, precision movements in the heat of melee. I'll never enjoy BioShock for that reason alone.:(
And a game that allowed too many varied characters, without challenging handicaps to force the player to think, would lose the Thiefy atmosphere because the "puzzles" would have to allow for even more solutions. It would be too loose. For Thief to work, there has to be a controlled scenario you have to play through. A lot of the ideas that fall outside of what Thief is often sound like a desire for more of The City, not Thief...just The City to go crazy in. As a setting for all kinds of wild ideas.
Like all these damned movies (okay, some are entertaining, regardless), that throw a savage, or backwoods, or ultra-rural character into New York. Hilarity ensues!

The werewolf thing was just an example. And everyone needs to know me, for I am the greatest single man to walk the face of Earth.
You could use pagan magic to become a wolf or something, when i think "stealth", i not only think of being able to hide/sneak and whatever, but also be able to make yourself unrecognizable by those who would otherwise bash your brains in. You could, for example, turn into a rat or something small, and scout out someone's house undetected.
As for Hammerite magic, you could use it in the event of an undead ambush to smite them with righteous fury!

jtr7- for most of us there is no issue with co-ordination in Thief. Do you have some medical condition that makes it hard for you to use a mouse and keyboard for this type of game? Because if you do I'm sorry to say that you aren't really representative of the rest of us, nice though it is for you to be able to play a more sedate game like Thief.
jtr7 on 6/9/2007 at 21:35
Do we have a representative? Will you be appointing one? Are you having a bad hair day? Can you back off with the insulting tone? ASSume much? Thanks for picking one comment out of dozens to pick on. Like a hangnail--don't pull on it!
Medical condition? No. Physiologically-speaking, let's just say I was never good at sports, but I can sit in front of a computer, drafting table, sculpting table, easel, desk, etc., just fine.
I think--as best as I know how. Physically, this car's a lemon.
Chillax, man.:cheeky:

Errr, don't freak out. I'm not being insulting. Blame it on my job if you like, but when someone says they lack fine and fast motor control what am I supposed to think?

I think your beloved atmosphere (and the lack of it in TDS) is often some kind of illusion. I'd say that almost every game with far better graphics than TDP/TMA would have killed your (understanding of) atmosphere, since it would have been inevitably different. I even think that if someone re-created the original levels from T1/2 in T3Ed or any other machine you would have the same feeling of uneasiness. In TDS there
were rich class areas, slums and also a few parts reminding me of S&R, what concerns industrial things, but if one keeps telling to himself that it is
not right...somehow...it's clear that he doesn't feel any atmopshere he's wishing to feel. TDS had it's faults (and for the 1456th time: it's even worse in the non-English versions because they
are English) but it had a certain amount of atmosphere which I liked a lot; mainly built upon the somehow still-life-like graphics with some melancholic music.
PS: I think it would be interesting to try TDS with the music of TDP/TMA. If I'll come far enough I'll try it out myself, but I guess there are some methods to cheat the subjective feeling of atmosphere.
Well, for starters, Im pretty sure that I never claimed T3 was devoid of atmosphere. I said its atmosphere was lacking in comparrison to the original two. Normally, you cant say stuff like that. Apples and oranges, ect. However, I make that statement because the 3rd game bears the title of Thief, and yet was significantly different than the first two. You've taken an apple and changed it to an orange. You said that if the original levels were re-made, I still wouldnt like it. Well, thats probably true unless the feel was maintained. That is the heart of my complaint, that it is too different from the originals. If the story was independant of Thief, and the game was released with a different main character, which is to say, if the game wasnt supposed to be Thief, then it would be judged on its own as an original creation. However, this isnt the case, and I can, therefore, compare it to the first two and state what I believe is different and why that makes it (in my opinion) inferior.
All this is not to say I do not like T3. I bought and enjoyed the game. However, I do not believe it can be put on par with the originals and I outlined why in my above post.
Regarding the various parts of the city, I did not intend to say that the places did not exist in T3, I meant that they were poorly represented and extremely compressed. Everything was so close together and in such a small area that it didnt have the feel of a city. In my mind they would have been better to model one part of the city (Which all the load zones together might adequately model)
Anyways, I only give my opinion, and I am trying my best to give it without bashing T3. As I say, I like the game. I just think it pales in comparisson.

While there may be a chance Thief 4 will bomb at least it's better than no thief at all, in my opinion. Some of us actually enjoyed TDS, even though it was the weakest in the series. Rather than go back and play T1-2 for the 'I lost count a long time ago' time, which I will continue to do despite, I would much rather play a new thief game instead.
As far as acrobatics and assassin like skills go, I say throw them in. Who can really say they aren't part of being a thief based on them being non-existent in the first two games? I'd bet that they didn't have the technology to do all the fancy-shmancy moves and acrobatics you see in similar veined games today. I'm all for adding them to a future thief game. But for those who aren't able to handle that, and there is nothing wrong with it, I'd make it so that you can play the game either way you want and finish it. That means if you want to play the stealthy, sneak around slowly type of thief then fine, I'll see you at the end line and vice versa with the acrobatic thief types.
SubJeff on 6/9/2007 at 22:16
I'd like a Thief 4 done well.
But if it's going to be rubbish I'd rather play FMs and wait for TDM FMs.
