Publishers are eying Thief again... - by shadowthief

While I didn't have time to read the entire threat I'd still like to state my 'professional' opinion... :laff: :ebil:
Regarding the question of whether or not Bethesda should make a fourth Thief game...
Let's put it this way: what have we got to lose?
IF Bethesda makes a new game, even if it turns out terrible it will still receive enough promotion to point some people in the direction of the previous games. If it turns out great, well, that'd be great, wouldn't? We'd have a whole new game to drool about. :)
I can understand the point of view saying the Thief series needs to be left alone, but the truth is, we can't know unless we give it a try, right?
If they made a new game, IMO a tight, but very non-linear environment is in order. And don't you start mentioning white assassin hoods. From what I've seen of the trailers Assassin's Creed is everything TDS should've been. The idea of being able to access virtually any spot of the gaming universe is awesome.
If they do somehow put Garrett into the game the first thing I'd worry about is the voice actor. Seriously. :)
Basically, forget all the things they could mess up and think about all the things the game could become if BETHESDA actually makes a game focused on stealth that's as detailed as the Elder Scrolls series was... Tons of equipment, hundreds of hidden passageways, dozens of conspiracies to be discovered... Think of the possibilities!

Exactly me dear Ivy.

Bethesda, I hope you're reading some of this. Do it. Tackle it.

Here is my personal opinion :D
I'd love to see a new Thief game, and Bethesda would be the most ideal developer for it right now. Even though Oblivion was kinda casual-console-kid type of game, considering that it's main thing was combat and magic, the stealth part was done quite well. (and the mods will bring this to
almost same quality as Thief) I mean, how many so called 'action' games have you seen where the stealth part was 1) not done at all, 2) completely broken (Soldier of Fortune 2 for example), or 3) very poor and/or you had/could use it in only one or two parts of the game (Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy) And if there's one thing in Oblivion that is significantly better than in Morrowind, it's stealth.
If they did develop Thief 4, it certainly has a chance of being a very good game. UNLESS:
- They make it for PC and consoles at the same time. (This is the biggest mistake any game developer can make, look how TDS turned out to be because of this.) Make a good PC version first and then make console version, if needed.
- They choose a crappy game engine where Garrett has lost his ability to swim and all the city's store owners are out of rope arrows. (Again, TDS)
- They try to make it more accessible for casual gamers and console kids by adding stupid gimmicks. (eg. "Garrett does this ultra cool acrobatic move where he kills three guards with his dual-wield daggers in one second")
- They don't get Stephen Russell to do Garrett's voice. (If the player plays as Garrett, or Garrett appears in the game in any way. I'm not entirely sure would it be best to make a new player character or stick with G..)
Now some of this has been already mentioned, but this is what I'd like to see in Thief 4:
- BIG city that you can explore at will and there are people there that won't attack you on sight (like TDS, but better) And you could rob almost any random house if you wish.
- Day/Night switching, it would be awesome when you are on a mission and "oh crap, the sun is rising, better do this quick"
- REALISTIC damage system, which was already described by someone in this thread earlier. Meaning that not you or AI can take many hits. And if a guard hits you in your arm for example, you can't for example shoot bow well/at all, so you must return to your apartment and rest. (Or you don't have to if you want to play a character who is disabled) And if you take a really hard hit, the wound could bleed and if you don't cure it, you'll eventually pass out (then the city watch will throw you in jail, if they find your body) or even die. This would mean that the players must really be stealthy. In TDS, you could just fight everyone, drink healing potions and you'd be pretty much invincible.
- You could run out of a mission if you're in tough situation (sun is rising/you are bleeding etc) and come back later, there are no real loot requirements, but if you don't get enough loot to pay your rent, you're thrown out of your apartment, and you must live in the streets or find a new apartment... And you could always live in a sewer or abandoned building (the cradle :laff:) if you want.
- Reputation. Meaning if nobody ever sees you, they won't be able to recognize you. Especially the civilians think you're just a normal guy. The City Watch is always looking for Garrett though, but they'd put more patrols on streets if Garrett has been seen. And if you run around killing people (and you are seen), the City Watch would post wanted posters (and they would actually WORK this time), meaning that the civilians would report you to City Watch, and almost everybody would recognize you.
- AI can climb up ladders, mantle if needed and even jump small distances. It'd be really funny to see a guard jumping over the rooftops or something and slipping to oil puddle you just placed there. :ebil:
- Rope arrows would have great physics, (
http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=1670624142450283901) like in The Dark Mod and you could use the rope to pull something near you, or tie the other end of the rope to something and use it to trip people or to reach some place (placing the rope over rooftops and then use it to get further than you could jump... I hope you understand)
- And you could also use the environment to knock out / kill people. Like if you drop a create on their head they will be knocked out, or if it's a really heavy crate, they might even die.
- Garrett would lose his Infinite Bag Of Lootâ„¢ and if you have enough loot with you, you'd need to take the loot bag home or to a fence. You could buy more loot bags. (I like the word loot bag :D I dunno why)
- You could take all this useless stuff like skulls and bones with you, and still be able to use weapons.
- Bring back the burricks and the spiders! And try to make haunts and zombies more scary this time.
- Factions... You could choose if you ally with Keepers, Hammers, Pagans, other thieves eg. (there could be new factions also) And the allience would be better than TDS. For example if you ally with Hammers, you'd get some missions to steal something from the pagans etc. But they would not help you fighting against City Watch. Or at least Hammers and Keepers wouldn't. Pagans and other thieves don't like City Watch anyway so they would probably attack them if you are allied enough with them.
- Oh, and the missions, there could be many side-missions that aren't part of the storyline and you could get them from talking to people in inns and such. They could be completed in any order and you wouldn't have to complete them in order to complete the storyline.
- Your actions would have real consequences, there would be a newspaper that would tell about your robberies and it would have other random news too, to make it feel realistic. And if you murder some random dude, chances are that nobody cares. But there is also a chance that he/she was some very important noble and it'd be all over the news. And people on the streets would talk on current and past events.
- Somekind of multiplayer mode, even if it's only two players in LAN or something. It would be great to rob a mansion with the help of your friends. :) But the emphasis should still be in the single player experience, multiplayer should be only little extra bonus.
- Oh, and give us editor with the game DVD.
Whew, a pretty big post? If by chance, any of Bethesda's employees are reading this; DO IT! We wan't a new Thief game, but take your time, don't rush it, no release dates until you feel it's really finished.

And I want a good story, obscure, political and psychological, I want readables giving me uneasiness, I want the bricks to tell stories, I want all people (I rather don't call them NPCs, that's for computer games only) to have a context, and I don't want any stupid or comercial stuff in all of that. Fahimt? Good.
Maladict on 27/9/2007 at 19:22
To add to the list:
Other thieves (They don't have to be other human players, NPC's would do just fine).
Assassination Kill Moves (Strangling, Poisoning, etc. Who says Garrett can't employ a few of these from time to time. Survival of the fittest).
More Combat Moves (Garrett is a master thief after all. But nothing too fancy, it wouldn't fit this series of games).
The Government (Apart from the City Watch. Think Anhk Morpork from Discworld. You have the City Watch and then the Palace Guard. It would be cool to have a CIA like side to it as well).
More Gadgets (The old ones work fine and I'm not saying that we should abandon them, only add to them).
Customizable Look (Let the folks personalize Garrett as they see fit).

I know we all like immersion.
But realism for the sake of realism can ruin the gameplay.
If we decide to make a loot weight limit so that it looks more real then we will stop playing thief and we will play the Antique Avalist, where we run around a mansion trying to decide what´s the best loot to grab.
If things were to be realistic then Garrett shouldn´t even br able to run with all this loot.
RavynousHunter on 28/9/2007 at 00:28
One thing I want most of all:
MORE TRAPS.
Tripwires, caltrops, pits, oil slicks, stuff like that. Just makes for more fun and more havoc. Place a tripwire behind a set of caltrops so that when someone trips over it, they get a lethal face-full of caltrops.

Yeah, fully-interactive environment. I just smashed a wooden beam in Dark Messiah with a paper knife, that's what I like. Let me burn down the City with a single candle in my hand.
Seriously, I don't want Garrett to be incredibly cool in the way he kills people or free-runs the quarters. I'd like them to avoid most of the major unlogical things (maybe no more invisible hands which grab the loot) and some of the "computer reality elements" (incredibly huge inventory, walks-slower-with-sword-in-hand-mode and so on).

Well, I dont really care who makes the next Thief game, its hard to imagine it worse than TDS. Maybe they build a medicore game including a easy mod-able engine with lots of available tools, so it would b easy to alter the game to your taste.
I see that lots of people here post their wishlists, so do I!
Thief 1&2 were very good games, except the graphic engine I have only minor wishes for the next Thief.
* More realistic lock picking + realistic animation. Even the Thief 1&2 lock picking was a lot better than TDS.
* I am not entirely a friend of free roaming in the city, but it would be nice to have some free time between missions to steal stuff from rich people in the city - to buy mission equipment.
* Reusable arrows you can pull out from dead shot bodies
* More pagan missions, they were pretty much left out in 1&2, but they could haven been awesome as the maw of chaos and the tree beasts in Thief 2 prove.
* Guards wearing armor immune to arrows.
* Mantling animation
* Strangling wire for enemies wearing helmets or trickster beasts which cannot be blackjacked
* Guards hearing bodies drop.
* Guards getting alarmed by rope arrows, missing colleagues, dropped weapons.....guards paying more attention.
* Stomach crawling
* The ruturn of the craymen.:D
* And last but not least disguise. Blackjack a guard and use his clothes.
Cant think of more right now, but I am pretty sure I forgot something. :p
