Also something important that destroyed TDS...
No Lag
Perfect control of your movements
Perfect control of your jumps
Perfect awareness of your body
In Thief 1 and 2 you really felt your body there.
TDS feels more... clumsy.

Agreed, Gambit. Using the third person perspective in TDS was downright painful. In TDP & TMA the movement felt more flowing and natural, as opposed to the 'jerkiness' of TDS. Even L. Croft's movements (on the PS games) seemed more natural than those of Garrett in TDS.

If you'll forgive this Newbie for sticking his Oar in (first post. hooray), I'd say that the last thing that the next Thief Game would need is a '4' on the end.
It needs to be set in the same universe, but through the eyes of a different character, and marketed as a different game. Garrett's story is finished (at least as the main character, no reaon why he couldn't show up again, especially as a mysterious keeper), and it is time that another character was developed or introduced.
Gameplay should obviously resemble TDP and Metal Age, but with more of the downright weirdness of the first. I want another level like Konstantine's-Krazy-Kastle!(TM)
So yes to another 'Thief' game, no to a direct sell-it-to-the-dimwitted-fanboy/console monkey safe sequel. Thief fans are a little more mature than that, and deserve better. (though I could be wrong... ...cue posts excaiming that 'Teh TH33f n33dz MO4R L4Z0RZ!!! -whatever the hell that means)

oh well,
may someone get in contact with some people from bethesda and make them play fan missions from thief 2 , and also make them read this thread....
it would be awesome if they followed our guidelines !!!
then the "is there going to be a thief 4 ?" thread could be unlocked :joke:

You know, that's a really good idea. I always thought the idea of doing a sequel was to market to the fans of the originals. Not only is there a wealth of missions out there showing how fan (or at least this vocal group of them) think Thief should be done. Plus the ratings and reviews, as well, there's a whole heap of market research already done.

Yay !
What I would like in a sequel:
A big City where every house can be entered and looted.
Option to not only crouch but also crawl (so you can hide under a bed)
The possibility to hide bodies in containers, under the bed, etc.
A way to sneak-peak the other side of a door without opening it.
These are good ideas :>
You could be a boogeyman under the bed :D

Glad to see the debate still rages strong. I have to agree with whoever said a game related to the originals but not a true prequel or sequel would be the best art and sense wise. Businesswise however, a prequel or sequel does ring better. Still, look at Bioshock and how awesome its reception is considering it's not even remotely related to SS2 and the original SS.

And LAN, damn it! Think of the awesomeness of a Thief LAN party! (i know, ima dork, kill me.) 3-4 homies get their comps together for a night of Jolt-energized pilfering and stealth! I think it might just get my ass off Guild Wars for a while...

I think it could turn out to be a disaster if some developer judged what the fans like from fan missions. That's some kind of intellectual incest. After all we would be standing here with a couple of rob-the-huge-mansion-and-find-the-secret-tunnels-underneath or find-the-mystic-artifact-that-affects-all-people-around missions, sold as a new game. Or, even worse, with new assassin moves.
Besides that I have seldom had a real "thievy" (as you call it) feeling when playing an FM – even if it was a better one and I liked it. I would trust that Terri Brosius and all those that seem responsible for the ideas behind The City (to name our universe that way) had and still have some concept that we don't know and that is capable of giving birth to another Thief game with the same amount of atmosphere and intelligent standard. I'm sure they have not, but that would be something I'd be hoping for.
One of the more interesting things for me would be a re-done TDS, although it seems to be the least probable. With all the issues admitted by Randy Smith and Jordan Thomas (and those many people shed tears about) there should be enough guidelines how to do it right.....and to find out what they originally wanted us to experience.

Well, no news from Bethesda on this. You'd think that if it were completely untrue, some rep would announce that the rumors are false and not based on any aspirations to resurrect the Thief franchise. So, maybe it IS true and they're just not talking?
