So this is basically *null and void*. :p

As long as it doesn't turn into "Endless Despair".:sly:

On the one hand I love the idea, on the other I hate it.
So much to get right, so much to get wrong. And even if it comes to fruition what are the chances of a decent editor? Because come on guys that really is a big part of what's kept this alive for so long and I keep saying this but - I think TDM is really going to rock.

I've never played a Bethesda game. I've never played any Fallout games. I'm mildly intrigued by Fallout 3 and am considering revisiting the previous Fallout games once I finished BioShock, STALKER and Dark Messiah.
That said, I never finished Deadly Shadows. I enjoyed it, but ultimately it failed to live up to the previous game, which failed to live up to the original, so I guess it's a law of diminishing returns.
Rather than worry about what they might do if this rumour actually has any substance and complaining about what T:DS didn't achieve, wouldn't time be better spent (and isn't it usually in this bloody forum) thinking about what Bethesda's strengths are as a developer and what they could bring to the Thief universe that might produce a strong game?
If Muz's comments are anything to go by, with Emil onboard at Bethesda and Fallout 3 being an open-ended mix of FPS(?) and RPG, I'd be game for a new take on Thief that combined the free-roaming City idea with allying and warring factions (that was attempted in DS but most probably agree, didn't really pan out) but with a fully upgradable and versatile Thief, replete with stats and inventory/weapon choices, such as a complement of melee weapons, bows/crossbows, and a steampunk-medieval-themed arsenal. That'd be an interesting concept and possibly a very capable and improved upon sequel to the original Thief games.

If it was more like an expanded universe concept, where we'd get to explore The City as a whole, but not as Garrett, but maybe as a member of the Thieves' Guild, perhaps--or someone who is asked to become a member as the game goes on. (Garrett turned down membership and was considered a threat). Basically, if it wasn't trying to be Thief from Garrett's point of view, but served as a companion piece, allowing us to see much more of the Thief Universe. There's a great deal more of The City that we've never seen, than what we have through Garrett's eye(s). There are entire districts we've only heard about. Keep it faithful, but since change is inevitable, make it from a different perspective, and not the little girl's. I'd like to further explore the Warden, Baron, and Hand Mage concepts.
And the following comment is not meant to bash TDS; however...when it's being said and repeated that veterans of LGS would help a new Thief game kick ass, I have to remind people that many veterans worked on TDS, and the veterans themselves weren't satisfied, most of the fans weren't happy or happy enough with the results, etc. SO THEN...if the vets who would come aboard such a project could take the time necessary to finish what they started, have customizable tools that worked WITH them, build it for the PC FIRST, and bring to the Thief Universe what they've wanted to all along but couldn't-- I think THEN it WOULD kick ass.
We hear about a queen, Barons, magistrates, Dukes and Duchesses, Governors, contacts overseas, and so on. The City could be fleshed out. Blackbrook, Blackbrook Underguild, Grand Library, elemental crystals from the commoners' point of view, the languages of Prinkish and Brillian, Throvian art and wine, Illyrian tea, Tatyana's Flowers from the Mountains of Esse, bandersnatches, the Grandmauden estate, the Baron's estate, the River, the Shemenovs, horses and dogs, birds, fish, fisherman, the ruins of Soulforge, so much they could do if given the rights. Should do.

I agree. I like the idea of not having Garrett star in it but maybe referenced somehow - or even meeting him and training with him. Something like that. Maybe getting to see how the Keepers started, or being a part of the downwinders and getting banished from them. So many possibilities.

Well, personally, I'm ALL FOR bringing it on. I'm willing to give a new Thief title a chance, esp from an established company that even has Emil on board.
BTW, this may sound like ignorant blasphemy, but as for not using Garret (I agree, his story is over)... could they use Zaya instead? Like, buy the rights or come up with some arrangement? She is such a cool character, and fits into the world so well...

Instead of being too involved with Garrett, I'd get a kick out of having Garrett steal from me/my character. I think it'd be cool if a torch was extinguished nearby, my character says "That...wasn't a rat....", I get knocked out, hear Garrett mock me saying "Amateur" as I fade to unconciousness, wake up, and have to find more loot again. I'd like to see it implemented in a way that it could happen once during the game, at one of many places in The City based on my actions, so I don't always know if and when it will happen. An expert player would never see this happen if he/she played a disciplined game.
I don't know if they'd go with Zaya, but a character based on her would be nice, too.

Generally speaking, Lara and April are the only two video female video game characters that have done well. I dunno if having a female Thief player character would be such a great idea - unless you were able to pick at game start.
