Publishers are eying Thief again... - by shadowthief

Samus? Various female protagonists of jRPGs? I don't see female characters do "less well", they're just not as often done. That's different.
Anyway, the reason for my apprehension is that I'm sure there's some sort of crazy legal thing that would preclude the possibility of them ever being able to use Zaya. But the fan in me says I like her so much I'd like to see her again.
In fact, I'm liking T2X so much I'm gonna "pretend" it's canon.

I dunno if having a female Thief player character would be such a great idea - unless you were able to pick at game start.
Hell, lets take that idea one step FURTHER! Instead of choosing from different characters, give the player the ability to craft their own characters, similar to the way Oblivion does it, only w/o the ridiculously GARGANTUAN noses! And choose what kinda digs your character starts off with, like Robes (ie: Black Hand Robes), Garrett (TDS), or Garrett (T1/2 Cutscenes, w/ cloak). But one thing i want is
more acrobatics, because i think any Thief worth their salt should at least be able to run along a wall or do a backflip, or somethin, i mean, come ON!
I think BethSoft will do fine, i liked TDS, it was ok, Oblivion was kickass, and i bet Fallout 3 will be sweet as hell too.

If they make a Zaya-like character to choose from, and show respect to the female gamers in how she's presented, like Zaya was for T2X, then that'd be a nice alternative. Just removing the tattoo, and tweaking her clothing so it's not the same but rational would be all that's necessary.

Deus Ex with Ubisoft, Thief with Bethesda - man - that'd be sweet.

I with Emil onboard at Bethesda and Fallout 3 being an open-ended mix of FPS
(?) and RPG, I'd be game for a new take on Thief that combined the free-roaming City idea with allying and warring factions (that was attempted in DS but most probably agree, didn't really pan out) but with a fully upgradable and versatile Thief, replete with stats and inventory/weapon choices, such as a complement of melee weapons, bows/crossbows, and a steampunk-medieval-themed arsenal. That'd be an interesting concept and possibly a very capable and improved upon sequel to the original Thief games.
Yeah, my only real reservation is that they RPG things up too much. But at the same time attempts to recapture the old magic are likely to fail so maybe a change-up is tolerable. Emil's not the keeper (ar ar) of Thief gameplay necessarily but he does make kickass levels. Really, when I look at it, only the first one has the really tightly woven and subtly told/presented story (compared to the other two anyway) that didn't over-do the fantasy/magic stuff. And what's the factor that was missing from the sequels? Ken Levine as writer.
I doubt that's all there is to it, but I suspect its part of it. So who knows. Really the writing is my main worry, now I think about it. The first was more of a noir-ish thriller, the others branched into more and more into "fantasy" questing sorts of stuff. Maybe that's inevitable when you flesh things out, but oh well.

I know I'm repeating myself here, but I wish the writing style for the pirates, thieves, and Pagans were more pre-TDS. The Pagan-speak and the thugs were hard for me to get used to in TDS.

They were rubbish in TDS. Purile.

Yeah, mine to actually. It needs a special writer to get it right. And sods law says some stuuupid gameplay mechanic will be messed up gay-style.

I reckon it would be great if someone attempted to create a new thief, because it cant hurt, theres a chance they could make a great game, if you don't like it - dont play it! hehe
100% agreed.
Even if a supposed continuation/prequel/new series will be as bad as DeusEx2 compared to DeusEx, it won't hurt in any way.
failure2comply on 30/8/2007 at 09:58
I agree on the writing part. Without a solid plot and excellent story, the game would be shite.

Everyone (including previous devs) keep talking about Thief in a large free roaming City environments, which sounds cool, but... I'm not sold on that. I love games like Oblivion and World of Warcraft, they're great fun. But Thief has always been in the mission/chapter format, with certain objectives to achieve to end a level. I worry that this free roaming GTA style of play just won't feel very thieflike to me.
