We should forget all this "playing as other factions" crap.
Just focus on a rock solid good Thief game.

Garett doesn't have to be portrayed as a child in a prequel. Think about how old he was in Thief 1. To me he seemed to be in his 30's or possibly even older. Alot of things have happened since he was trained with the Keepers and left them to do the whole solo thing. I'd bet years have passed since then. So to do a prequel of his younger years after having left the Keepers is an entirely plausible idea and much better than trying to do one based on his childhood, from a canon standpoint.

I hope it's just a rumor. They can continue their Elder Crap series if they want but better stay off the thief series. Raping fallout with fallout3 is enough and I really don't want more of their shit.
Quoted for Truth/Ephasis/Evidence/Whatever. I couldn't agree more.
I also agree with spix's circlet. One sequel is enough, more than that and it's almost always dangerously stretching the story.

Hey, we could always do a prequel with someone like Artemus. :cheeky:

Concerning the "create your own thief" idea: I think it would be a bad idea. Why? Well the series was built upon the city and it's denziens just as much as it was with the main character, or a main character. Separate either of the two and you're flirting with disaster, which is why I think a prequel with Garrett would be ideal. On the other hand you have the unofficial thief expansion with the female thief as the protagonist. I believe it did very well, I still haven't played it, and I guess that shows that some of the fans wouldn't mind playing another main character besides Garrett. I personally would rather play Garrett but if it comes down to me choosing between a create your own thief or an entirely different main character, I vote the latter.

In this game the criminal underworld (Ramirez etc, Downwind Thieves Guild, etc) could all be fleshed out and Garret's role could be elaborated upon without compromising the same morally compromised character we all know and love.
I
like that idea! I always had a blast when a mission involved Ramirez or the Downwinders. :thumb:

I honestly don't think Bethesda getting their hands on the Thief IP is such an abomination to gaming. Granted, I'd rather have Irratio... I mean 2K Boston & 2K Australia get their hands on it (although who knows how many ex-Irrational people now work under 2K Games/Bethesda - I don't - If you do please enlighten me), but it could be far worse (imagine if EA had gotten their hands on it like they did with SS3!).
Also,... with Bethesda's record of accommodating the modding community, I would've thought people would be more enthused by this (possible) development (I know, they're not going to open up Fallout 3 to modders, but with Thief's track record they'll probably have to :D What's a Thief game without FMs).
Oblivion was 'simplified', yes, BUT nearly every bit of TES 'complexity' was later modded back in. Any serious TES fan wouldn't be caught playing Oblivion vanilla more than once anyway ;) Hell, you can even play Oblivion like a Thief now (Thieves Arsenal mod, all the weapons and tools of Thief, including water, vine/arrow, gas, fire arrows, the blackjack), combine it with a few other mods such as Window Entrances, Vaults of Cyrodill and Stealth&Guard Overhaul and OOO, and you've almost got a modern day Thief game... almost.
So providing they make it open to modding I'm optimistic, plus they're Bethesda right? How much damage could they do to a Thief singleplayer campaign?

I'm not mad at
you, NL, just getting weary.

If they did it "right", we wouldn't
have to mod it. Modding would be for fun, not to repair a product shipped before it was ready. Hell, the modding community's never finished repairing TDS, but damn, they tried. They really tried. They made great strides. Props to all! T3Ed makes DromEd look even better. Sure, T3Ed's more powerful in ways, but it's not good for making Thief live up to the promises.

We don't wanna find out, do we?:sly: I'm not worried about Bethesda themselves. I'm worried that they won't have the right to use EIDOS property in full. Also, we have no idea how much time they will have to spend getting a game engine to do what it needs to do. Let's learn from history and stop making the same "mistakes with a fresh twist." We don't have any idea what will get implemented and what will have to be thrown away to keep the ball rolling toward the deadline. We can't say what kind of influence the Keepers of the Bottom-Line will have over how Thief gets handled. We do not know if Bethesda will acquire all the rights to use all the names, places, things, and all the story elements to make it Thief, or if it will be a knock-off.
I can be hopeful, but I GUARANTEE that if a game gets made called "Thief", these forums will be full of people screaming about the bad things I saw coming miles away and then some. And the "You're crazy! This game rocks so hard!" from the other extreme.
Optimistic but not blind, please. No nasty surprises, please. No cries of shock if it goes bad. Thief is too damned hard to quantify and reformulate to expect any company to get it "right".
More Thief? Sure. Good Thief? I can only hope. Happy surprises, please.

I know, I have mixed feelings too, but the main point I was trying to make was that this is probably not the worst thing that could happen to Thief, I mean, next to Spector, Levine and Emil (or insert your favourite thief developer here) getting their hands on it BethSoft is quite possibly the best realistic possibility for the series (I could think of about a hundred far worse possibilities offhand, most of them involving dirty words like "EA" and "PS3 Exclusive" and stuff like that), plus at this point it's little more than an unconfirmed rumour so let's not jump to conclusions about BethSoft's intentions.

For the sake of argument, let's say they
do get it right (indulge me :p). I mean, they've got talent, they've got big pockets, there's at least a 50/50 chance of that right? :D Anyway, assuming (for the sake of argument) they get it right - there will always be room for modding and FMs. They're not going to carbon copy Thief 1&2 (/&3) and put it in a blender, appeasing every single Thief fan. For example they may choose to make it 8 parts "normal" missions/gameplay and 2 parts "monster" (undead etc.) gameplay - regardless of how well they implement it - there will always be critics (ie some might say there wasn't enough or too much 'monster gameplay). Or they choose to include the remote camera or some new potion and people will say that makes the game too easy. So we can (and should) at the very least expect a great 'base' game from BethSoft, and with a little luck modding support which would make the game 'eternally' replayable (so to speak), until we see proof of the contrary, IMO.

Why wouldn't they acquire the Thief property in its entirety? If you know more than I about this please share? Are you referring to individual IPs within the thief 'universe' belonging with different people who worked on the thief games or something? Please elaborate.

Let's hope for the best and reserve our pessimism for when there's actual cause ;) If it truly sucks, then you could always choose to not play it.
