I think this goes here, although I'm not asking for help getting through the game. I cannot continue the first two Thief games on my computer (I may need a patch to get them to work again), and I can only play the third one on my brother's computer. Since I never got to finish either of the first two games (got most of the way in T:DP but only got through one level on T:MA), a couple things in T:DS had me somewhat confused. One big thing was the mechanical eye. I know it's a horrible spoiler, but how the heck did he loose his eye and get it replaced with a mechanical one? Also, what are these big mechanist robot things I hear about? And Victoria? I have no idea when I'll be able to play the past 2 games again, and for the sake of fanfiction I read that has to do with this stuff, I really need to know.
Thank you tons!! ;)
Oh, I just noticed there was a specific board for Thief I, II spoilers. I can't delete this one, however. Sorry for the inconveniance.

Only read past this point if you're absolutely SURE you want to have these things spoiled. I strongly recommend finding a way to get the first two games running and experiance the storylines for yourself. The TheifGen forum has a thread near the top (the thread title is in red so it's easy to spot) that has a bunch of technical questions and answers regarding the Thief games, so read that and see if you can get them to work before reading any futher -
Garrett lost his eye during The Dark Project. For a time, he worked for a man named Constantine and a woman named Viktoria. Garrett aquired a gemstone known as 'The Eye' for Constantine. Within The Eye was an actual human eye, however it was old and useless. As such, Constantine and Viktoria turned on Garrett (Constantine was in fact The Trickster in a human disguise, and Viktoria was a wood nymph in human disguise). Viktoria ripped out Garrett's eye. At the end of the game, in thanks for helping them defeat the Trickster, the Hammerites give Garrett a mechanical eye.

The robots in Thief 2 called 'The Builder's Children'. They were mechs created by The Mechanists, an offshoot of the Hammerites led by a fanatic named Karras. The Mechanists developed all sorts of advanced machines, like robots, a submarine, more advanced security equipment.

I already explained who Viktoria was, however, if you played through Thief III, you'd know she's dead, but you probably don't know how. At the end of Thief II, Garrett and Viktoria are working together to try and stop Karras from carrying out a plan that will kill everything organic in The City, leaving only Karras and his robots behind. Viktoria comes up with a plan to stop him that involves planting organic material inside his own cathedral, and luring his 'Servants' (citizens transformed into mindless mask wearing servants, who spew rust gas on command, the rust gas then detroys any organic matter around it) into the cathedral and setting them off, killing Karras. However, Viktoria is spotted and unable to make enough plantlife. She then sacrifices herself, exploding in a shower or organic matter and covering the opening room and several other rooms with enough plant life to carry out the plan.
I read through your explanations - thank you so much! Honestly though, knowing what happends doesn't ruin a game for me - I'll still play through it as soon as I am able to once again. And thank you for the link - I'll deffinetly have to check that out.
Just wondering though: What on Earth made Garrett want to work with Victoria again after she and Constantine turned on him and tore out his eye? That would be a pretty blunt way of saying 'You're fired', to me. :erg:

They had a common enemy. Karras controlled the Mechanists, and also had control over Sherrif Truart, head of The City Watch. After this, Karras came after Garrett and attempted to have him killed. This didn't sit well with Garrett. Karras knew of Garrett's abilities, and knew he's pose a risk. As such, he wanted to have him eliminated. Ironically, that's what ended up alerting Garrett to Karras's plans.
The Mechanists were also anti-Pagan. Not in the way the Hammers were. Sure, the Pagans and Hammers hated each other. But the Mechanists took it to an extreme. They rounded up Pagans throughout the street, and since they controlled The City Watch as well, they had them round them up and killed them too. They also launched brutal attacks on Pagan villages. In one Thief 2 mission, Garrett comes across a massacre - Mechanists had slaughtered an entire village of Pagan men, women, and children. The Mechanists were also VERY anti-nature, much more so then the Hammers. If it wasn't glass, stone, or metal, it was unworthy in their eyes. Even wooden structures weren't fit for them.
Viktoria supplied information, while Garrett did the dirty work. However, both proved invaluable to each other, and by the time of Viktoria's death, it as clear they had developed a friendship.
