Since my PC graphics card is out of commission, I've tried playing Quake 2 on the family Mac.
My god, Quake 2 has dated horribly. Thick as shit AI, monster closets... ugh.
I replayed bits of Duke3D, Blood and Shadow Warrior recently and they were wonderful. Loads of fun, filled with creativity and atmosphere. But Q2? Bland industrial complexes, bland enemies that all look the same, limited colour pallettes (mostly grey, brown and orange), arse textures (I'm aware of the enhancement projects, just don't know if they'd work with this OSX source port).

Well, that seems about right. If I remember correctly, Quake II's biggest impact in single player was its opening movie and the fact that its levels had multi-coloured lighting - if you had an accelerator card. I think it was more popular for its multiplayer at the time.

Which probably explains Quake 3.

I really enjoyed Quake II when I first played it through, but I don't think it holds up too well now and I will not play it ever again.

I've never actually completed more than maybe a mission of Quake 2. At the time I was too busy with stuff I actually enjoyed (Quake 1, the Hexen games) and now it just doesn't hold my interest for very long.

Quake 2 is awesome and you're wrong.

It certainly wasn't all about the railgun at the time whilst trying to play online with a 56K modem.
With a good connection though, definitely one of the most satisfying weapons of all time in my book.

Yeah, Quake 2 was a shitstain. Its intro movie was awesome but the game itself was hideous. They could've done something wicked with that engine but they turned it into Quake 1.3 instead. They set up the Strogg war (which when I read it initially sounded like one badass fight), I got chills when I saw the intro for the first time, and I was ready to be sucked into one hell of a game. Then I get to play Quake all over again, with less interesting enemies.

The game itself was so-so, but Quake 2 is one of my all-time favorite games because of mods like Rocket Arena 2 and CTF, which were incredibly addicting.
