The one thing from Q2 which really burned into my memory is the way the engine rendered explosions, namely in 3D! ((

AFAIK it was something absolutely new back then, although I always thought it looked shitty. I can't remember any other game since then doing it the same way, as apparently most people agreed with me.
Man, you can imagine how surprised I was when 8 years later I was playing Dungeon Siege 2, and saw that they rendered explosions in 3D, and it even looked just as shitty as it did in Q2!

Aliens vs Predator (Rebellion) had such deformable polygon explosions.

Ahhh, Unreal. Now that oozed with atmosphere and I was recall being genuinely in awe of the graphics 10 years ago. The first level on the Vortex Riker was amazing. Then you see the surface of Na Pali, lens flare, huge environments... I was truly blown away. I genuinely wanted to explore the world, read the PDA messages to find out more about the Nali culture, the Skaarj occupation, etc.
Ditto,
That feeling of stepping out of the Riker for the first time and seeing the Na Pali expanse was amazing, and to this day is still the most poignant moment I've ever had while playing a game.

Heartless bastards too quick to look back and bitch at dead heros. Quake 2 was fucking great in its time.
But it was pretty much just run and gun so I don't intend on defending it much.
Say one negative word about Quake 1 or Doom and I'll eat your soul, though.

Well, Quake wasn't so much as Doom in a medieval-ish setting, so by all rights it was fucking Hexen with a different name.
And coming to Doom, now that pile of... oh shi

Quake 2 had the best ever grenade launcher. For whatever reason, it was a snap to accurately bounce those pineapples around corners, off ceilings and over ledges. Anyone remember the Tesla Mine? Bzzzt!

I loved Quake 2 and it's expansions back in the old days and I still do. Though I use my own modifications nowadays to make it play a little differently each time. You gotta love them cvars.
So, does anyone still have their original copies with the music Sonic Mayhem did for the game? I never get tired of the music that gets played in the very first level, the track is called Descent into Cerberon I think.

Well I've gotten up to some level called "Torture Chambers". It's still pretty dull, feels like are more linear and boring version of Hexen (because it has level hubs).
Makes me appreciate Quake 4 a whole lot more. Half-Life definitely brought much needed innovation to the delivery of narratives in the FPS genre.
