Half-Life definitely brought much needed innovation to the delivery of narratives in the FPS genre.
Ah, the magic words

why quake 2 is awesome, even today
Wow, as someone who didn't play Quake 2 at the time, that video hurts my eyes. It wasn't the low poly graphics that were the problem, I play old games all the time, it was that god awful color scheme. Brown, brown, and a slightly different shade of brown. I'm starting to think the "artist" responsible should be shot for that.

Well I've gotten up to some level called "Torture Chambers". It's still pretty dull, feels like are more linear and boring version of Hexen (because it has level hubs).
Wait, you are saying Quake 2 and Hexen are similar because they both use the hubs/levels system? :weird:
Anyway, I didn't like Quake 4 all that much. It became lots of fun near the end though, when you were the one-man army like in the good ol' days. I fucking hate babysitting NPCs that get outsmarted by monkeys in battle strategy.

Quake 2 is most definitely earth tones. Not as bad as Gears of War though, which is far far more dull in palette. I actually thought Quake 2 was pretty apt with its color scheme to portray the endless brushed metal and rusty surfaces of the Strogg world.

I remember most of Q2 being quite the orange.

It got pretty colorful in The Reckoning, at least compared to the original Q2.
Remember the Strogg Freighter? I loved it's look.

I enjoyed Quake 2, and The Reckoning was a good single-player expansion I thought. Ground Zero was more multiplayer-focussed I think, and the single-player was pretty nasty. I didn't like it nearly as much.
The end boss for Ground Zero was ridiculously difficult and overpowered. That's about the only memory I have of the game. The Reckoning was pretty fun from what I remember.

I loved Quake 4. It was like all the best parts of Call of Duty and Doom 3.

Speaking of Unreal, did they ever come out with a real sequel to it in an expansion pack or something similar? Unreal2 does not count as a sequel.

Return to Na Pali, I believe.
There was also a fan-mod for Unreal Tournament called Operation Na Pali that not only ported Unreal 1 into UT but was an unofficial sequel in its own right.
