Return to Na Pali is correct. Fucking awesome expansion, too bad it was very short though.

The Quake games have always been about two things - 1) pushing PC hardware to the limit with groundbreaking tech 2) multiplayer. Quake 2 didn't disappoint there at all. The Quakes were the Crysii (lol) of their times. They undoubtedly were a major influence on how realtime 3D technology developed in general.

The end boss for Ground Zero was ridiculously difficult and overpowered. That's about the only memory I have of the game. The Reckoning was pretty fun from what I remember.
G.Z. introduced Gunners and Enforcers who would jump down from ledges and catwalks to engage you. The numerous, concealed security turrets were a nice touch, although they could take a beating and made exploration a cautious affair. The ceiling-hugging Spider-Borgs were the worst, though; they wouldn't sit still for long and were constantly blasting away while leaping about.

If you really liked Unreal you'll enjoy Return to Na Pali. It leaves certain plot elements unresolved, unfortunately, and I don't think they're tied up in Unreal 2.
Operation Na Pali for Unreal Tournament came out in 2002 and is easily the Unreal community's biggest singleplayer contribution to the game, six years later. Something like 30+ maps, I believe. I had a lot of fun with it, and most of the maps are of the same quality as the retail ones.

Unreal 2 has nothing to do with the original at all. It is a pretty good game in itself, but doesn't stand a chance against U1 imo.

Quake 2 was great because of how purely a run and gun game it is. I still get shits and giggles playing it - I certainly like the look of Quake1 better though. Unreal though - that was amazing. Some of the levels were stupid, but the colors, oh the colors. UT1 kicked it up a notch with an improved lighting, and "particle" system. UT1 is probably still the best multiplayer shooter around, though to be fair I have only played a little MP Q2.
Half-Life is too hallowed to recquire mentioning. Everyone knows the deal on Half-Life.
On the subject, has anyone ever tried Rune? It's not a shooter, it's a third person hack and slash, and it's gorgeous (for it's time, 2000, granted) I've been told it has some subtle effect of the color palette that makes it somewhat evocative of a Quake mod. The marketting was really sub par, because Gathering I think wanted to put the last of it's egg into Max Payne, but in a surprise, Rune turned out the be the top performer for Gathering that season.

Rune was a brilliant, underrated game. I played countless mp matches with a friend on a LAN, 1 on 1, just seeing who can lop the other ones head off, and then beat him to death with it. I used to lop off his limbs then wait till he tried to run away from my steel superiority, then throw his severed limbs at him for a final, humiliating defeat.

Rune
was brilliant, which was sadly overlooked by most people at the time. I still have my copy somewhere, I believe.

You dare mention that travesty of a sequel? :D Captain Tits vs the Skaarj. It's a shameful game when compared to the beauty and atmosphere of the first. What were they thinking? Completely leave out the Nali culture, retain only the generic alien race (Skaarj) and add gravity defying breasts. Someone, somewhere, should have got the Golden Mongoloid Award for that one.
If Khan had played Unreal 2, he'd be all like, "With my last breath, I spit at thee" And he'd be well right.

I often wonder, if Epic and Digital extremes had made Unreal 2,would it have been so crappy.
Legend Entertainment really botched it big time.
Then again Epic has not made anything as awesome as Unreal 1 and UT 1 since,so it may have been just as crappy.
Bjossi on 7/3/2008 at 03:46
Epic can't make good games anymore. I started seeing that long time ago, when playing UT2003.
The new installment, UT3, makes it more clear to me. I guess we'll never get games as good as U1 or UT1 from Epic.
