Hey, it's the future.
I too am sad the refreshing atmosphere of Na Pali so artfully constructed in Unreal and its expansion has yet to be revisited in a true sequel. That it was so carelessly discarded in favor of a multitude of far shallower settings in U2 still irks me.
The people at (
http://www.unrealsp.org) have churned out a few singleplayer expansions of their own throughout the years. None of them are as big as Op: Na Pali, but several easily pace it in quality, if not overtake it in some respects altogether.

Glad to hear that someone besides myself thinks that UT1 was a great game, and the rest in the series have been utter shit.

Quake 2 Multiplayer rocked. CTF, Action Quake, all that stuff was golden. i even liked the superhero mod.
i was also a fan of single player, although it was shite without a 3D accelerator.

I enjoyed Quake 2 too, although I was a Mac-wanker when it came out, so didn't actually get to play it until after Quake 3.
I didn't like it as much as original Quake, sure, but it was still a good game.
Never did play the multiplayer though, and I'm kinda bummed about missing out on Action Quake and Quake 2 CTF.
I just wish that id had made Quake 4 take place in the original Quake universe rather than the Strogg one. The world needs more Shamblers :(

As much as I'd like to see another game set in Quake 1's universe, Quake 4 completely stomped the shit out of Quake 2. Q2 was reasonably fun, yes, but Q4 just engaged me much more.

It could have really done without the NPCs and vehicle sections though.
Any time Raven do talky NPCs it makes me think of Elite Force, and Elite Force namby-pambyness has no place in Quake

So, basically, you wanted a game more like Quake 2. Gotcha.
Personally, I didn't mind the NPCs and I liked the vehicle sections a lot.

Everyone who has fond memories of Unreal 1 should really play Operation: Na Pali. You'll love it, it's great on all levels except for some substandard voice acting.

I like vehicle sections but Quake 4's were absolute shit. They felt so flimsy and seemed to be have just been tacked on. The gamed definitely peaked early with the great opening levels and kind of lost its way by the end but what FPS doesn't do that nowadays?
Anyway I thought Quake 2 was fantastic at the time and I liked both the expansions but it definitely hasn't aged as well as it's progenitor.

I think by 'some substandard voice acting' you mean 'completely reprehensible "who ever did this is going straight to hell" audio torture voice acting'. But yeah, otherwise the mod is great. Actually it really took me back to the days of Quake 2 mapping. I guess they're contemporaries in that sort of "sci-fi installation" design. Quake 2 was the daddy though
You don't see that stuff so much any more (although it's possible I'm just not looking). I guess because everyone got sick of it being about the only thing those old engines were really good at and was dying to branch out.
