I loved Quake 2, but hi-res HD textures don't really suit it. It just looks a bit weird, like photo-realistic packs for Minecraft or something.

Maybe they were just thinking about the MP?
Yes.
But anyway - it was a pioneering game released
long time ago. Keycards and all that was carried straight from platformers (that ID started with) and other then-popular genres. First accelerated 3D FPS man! .... it was all anybody cared about then.
Sure, sure, there were these LGS folks doing their thang...but it`s widely agreed they`re aliens from parallel universe so the point is moot.

WTF are talking about? A Rendition Verite hardware renderer and GLQuake preceded Q2. Even then I doubt that Q1 was the first hardware accelerated FPS, just the most popular and well known of that very early time period.
Q2 was an odd creature, it was one of the first attempts at transitioning FPSes from the simple formula of Doom, which no one really nailed until Half-Life. The objectives of Q2 and semi-non-linear hub-based levels work well enough and are definitely not why I hate the game, see the first post of this thread. The blue keycard comment was just me being charmed at how FPSes used to be, where key hunts were pretty much the only thing to do aside from kill everything.
If anything the genre is in a rut right now. There has been virtually no innovation since Half-Life 1 with its narrative delivery and storytelling techniques. Before people go mentioning "LOL NAH, PHYSICS IN HL2" that and pretty much most other examples are just iterative builds upon technology.
Modern Valve's current approach of game testing everything to death is an iterative build upon game design, the visible evolution from say the Hexen-esque "WHAT THE FUCK DID THAT SWITCH JUST DO?" is clearly there.

In the name of Holy Pedantry! :)
I am aware of that, also of the fact it`s irrelevant - Q2 was the first proper game to have all this out-of-the-box. Besides most folks could not afford any Verites or even Voodoos when they first appeared...by the time these came down in price Q2 was out.

Ok, I agree with that...I was never a big fan of Q1/Q2 SP myself, even then, it is just that there was nothing else like that. Hence the everyday "Duke is fun!" (me) / "It`s not proper 3D!" (my nemesis) argument at work.

Aside from this thread, from who?
Oh, it's
this thread. Oops.
Hmm... well, I'm sure I've heard people disparaging the game outside of TTLG, but the only complaints I can be certain of are those concerning the general brown-ness. Other than that, I couldn't swear that I wasn't making it up.
