What's the big deal about Quake Live? On another forum that I frequent, everyone seems to be blowing their load over this game, begging for beta invites. It's just Quake 3 Arena optimised to be playable in a frigging web browser.
It's probably A. the simplicity of the gameplay and B. it's free. I suspect that it's the latter more than the former; eg I seriously that doubt that Enemy Territory would've taken off if it hadn't been offered for free.
I got bored with pure deathmatch after eons of whoring Quakeworld. Unreal Tournament made Q3A seem antiquated in comparison. Sure, Q3A may've honed the art of DM to an absolute razor's edge, but at the end of the day it was still DM.
I love simple, pick and play games, but we have Left 4 Dead now. Gears of War and Halo brought finally brought co-operative multiplayer back on the radar and L4D has cemented it. I always enjoyed my co-op Doom LAN sessions than I did with DM.
P.S. I'm talking solely about the vanilla Q3, not mods that were made after-the-fact.

It's both A and B actually. I really like deathmatch as a way to cool off some steam. I preferred Q3A to Unreal Tournament for its faster pace and ease of movement. UT always felt constricted to me, though UT2k4 was better. The fact that rocket jumping almost nearly kills you is a downer too
I need to have an occasional dose of Quake to get my adrenaline up and rising

I still play Quake3 at the occasional LAN party I attend, you cant beat for sheer run and gun fun.

I played some of the beta, unsurprisingly it runs like a bat out hell, 125fps avg. The optimisation is superb. I can't comment on the netcode yet.
I'll keep playing until I get some beta invites and then pack it in.

I got 125+ FPS on Q3 2 computers ago. I doubt they've done much in that regard.

I've got four beta invites up for grabs (the fifth is reserved for the time being). If you're interested then please drop me a PM with your email address.

Apparently all invites have to sent out during the same session otherwise you lose all of them. Sorry guys.

i got no invites left since they stopped invites (limited supply) due to the stress test that began on wednesday. I like it sofar. the website is quick, even for me in Euro-land, the statistics are plenty and well presented. the game itself is pretty much q3a, so nothing new here. 2ndary mouse is ALWAYS zoom on all weapons. so what is the appeal ?
If I play L4D versus I don't expect to own anyone based on skill. I wanna have some lolz and know I can't really try to play the game "well" or "skillful" since my mates are either random guys/bots or with friends the AI director always tries to punish you as much as possible.
In q3a I always had the impression that skill and experience make you good in the game and real dedication and talent can get you into the first places on the scoreboard. Although most online matches are senseless fragfests without any "tactics" Q3Fortress or CTF with their basic rules still stand heads and shoulders over the tactical "depth" of a L4D versus match.
And the name "QUAKE" is engraved in our gaming conciousness.
And considering so many ppl still play q3a online, that's a no-brainer as far as web-games go I think. They introduced some "skill-matching" for the quick-online matches but apart from that you can join any "unranked" server. as soon as I get more invites I'll post here.

I have Quake 3 Arena for DREAMCAST!!! It was online (and even made use of the soon to be released broadband adapter as well as the built-in dial up modem), and supported the DC mouse and keyboard (which I own). I didn't have a PC then, and when this and Unreal Tournament came out for DC, I was ecstatic.
The mouse/KB controls saved this game. I tried it once on the one analogue sticked DC controller. UGH.:eww: The movement is w/the stick, and the aiming is w/the four face buttons. Ouch. It was set up similarly to N64 fps games, control-wise, and I could NEVER get used to that shit.
