Honestly there aren't enough memorable game makers to let them just fall away and not be just a little bit curious or hopeful they come back to making some cool games like you know they're capable of, or hear them out when they want to talk about games.

The problem is a lot of these guys, they turn into someone like John Romero, CliffyB, Tim Schaefer, Harvey Smith or Ken Levine -- either headachingly juvenile or unbearably pretentious or both.
"You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."
This is why I rap on people like Schaefer -- no matter what their pedigree or their background, when they do something like forget where they came from (Schaefer, CliffyB) or act like their own fame is enough to satisfy fans (Romero, once upon a time) or even so much as try to justify their own pseudo-intellectual pretentious bullshittery with more pseudo-intellectual pretentious bullshittery (Levine, Smith) they deserve to be called out.
In the case of Smith, he tried to use really trite "political commentary" that only Azaran would think is brilliant and called it "super fucking subversive" like that means anything. Then when the game bombed he complained reviewers didn't get it. Maybe not as severely stupid as any time CliffyB opens his mouth, but it did kill his credibility for a while.
