That video... Fear nature.
You guys haven't been offering enough animal sacrifices to Ra and Pan.

One of the sideffects of longterm drought is that the ground bakes to the extent that it is essentially cement, and then any water that does fall tends to run over the top of the ground rather than into it.
To be fair though, we could have incredibly well draining soils at this point and it wouldn't fucking matter. Two months of solid rain and walls of water are fairly extravagant.
A Dutch artist and amateur scientists recently discovered that digging trenches well over a meter deep and wide across the ground in parralel patterns allows the water to break through the 'cement' layer and is absorbed by the soil underneath. He's currently heading a project to turn vast swathes of longtime drought striken land in around the Sahara into fertile lands with this, so that what little rain does fall gets to where it counts and combat flash floods. I'll get a url when I can find it.
Anyway hope you people stay safe!

Things are getting better and it seems the worst has indeed passed. The flood levels peaked somewhere just below the '74 floods but there is still widespread devastation. Many suburbs east of me towards the riverside are simply gone, 2-3m underwater in an inland sea, it's mind-boggling. Power came back for us late last night but tens of thousands are still without power.
Sadly the death toll continues to creep, but that's still restricted to the flash-flooded areas where there was no warning or easy way out - in Brisbane, the preparedness has meant that there is likely to be no deaths attributable to the crisis.

Glad to hear it wasn't as bad as anticipated, Scots, and that you're safe. And sorry to hear of the deaths that have occurred.

We're back at home and it's fine, even the in-laws' restaurant seems to be untouched. It's on one of the streets nearest the river / botanical gardens in the city, so a huge relief. The flood paths were different from '74, which was an unexpected reprieve. The enormous trench that's the first phase of construction for Brisbane's new biggest building also filled to the brim with water, acting as a handy stop-gap.
Turns out moving an entire restaurant of gear (that'd seat around 110 people) including all of the wine and glasswear five storeys up wasn't needed!

Sorry if I ask again, but do you guys know how badly Narangba was affected?
