Ok so my question is on certain game engines there are ways of getting to places you shouldnt but they are cool none the less e.g far cry. I was wondering if you could do that (and any particular personal examples) in any one of the three games.

...and all the crate stackers began to smile.
Search for crate stacking or climbing in the forums. It should give you some interesting threads. For example someone climbed on top of the lighthouse in Precious Cargo (T2).

The links you've been given are great, but allow me to summarize the different ways you can go exploring in the first two games (never played the third);
1. Mantling (aka pulling yourself up on ledges) - This is part of the game, but it will also allow you to get to places you normally couldn't. If you can get your head up to an edge and there's room to pull yourself up, you can usually mantle up, whether you were meant to or not. For example, walls at the edge of a level, roofs, etc.
2. Rope arrows - Another part of the game. They will stick into anything wooden and dangle a rope for you to climb. They can be used anywhere there's wood, not just where the designers intended.
2. Stacking - Almost any object in the game that you can pick up can be stacked. Basically you drop it straight down while jumping and you end up on top of it. Crates are the largest and work best, but you can stack almost anything. This lets you gain height so that you can reach out of the way places.
3. Staircasing - Using crates to build a staircase rather than a vertical stack. Makes better use of crates, but harder to get the hang of.
4. Elevatoring - Using keys or flares to make yourself float. Allows you to climb to virtually any height.
5. NPC jumping - Walk up to an NPC, lean
past them, then jerk the mouse to the side so that your character bumps into them. You will be propelled back a random distance in a mostly random direction at a random height. Unpredictable, but you can end up on top of the roof.
6. Brush jumping - Similar to NPC jumping, but with inanimate objects. This can be used to get onto the upper walkways in the first training room in Thief 1/Gold. Very random though.
Note that I didn't discover any of these, I'm just listing them. Credit goes to the members here in the forum, particularly Luthien who seems to have discovered all kind of ways to do things that shouldn't be possible.
There are also one-off tricks that people have discovered. For example, in the Thief mission The Haunted Cathedral, you're only supposed to be able to look into the building through an open window in the back. However, it was discovered that if you crouch, move as far as possible into the opening, then turn around so you're facing out and jump, you'll pop inside.

Also, there are a few items that were not designed to be mantled but can be.
Door-mantling is where you mantle onto the top of an open door. It requires quite exact positioning but isn't difficult (the usual half-step back when mantling seems to help). If there's not enough space on top of the door when it's fully open then you could move so it is blocked against you when it closes and then "close" it. The door should be blocked in a position with more space above it. Door-mantling isn't much use unless there's somewhere else useful to climb/jump to, though.
Some objects like statues and street lamps can also be mantled.
I've also heard you can stack dead/unconscious bodies, but I don't think I've ever tried that myself.
Of course, perhaps the ultimate in you-should-not-be-here is to load a saved game in Dromed, reposition the Player wherever you wish and then saving into a load slot. :cheeky:
BTW My current favourite is flare-elevatoring.

What exactly is an NPC, and what does NPC stand for? i think you're talking about AI, but I just don't get what NPC means...

Non-Player Character, in the case of Thief, yes it's an AI. An NPC is a character that is not controlled directly by a human player.

T3 is a ton more limited in your 'explorative' capabilities, though . . . which is sad
I always meant to try out bomb jumping, but I don't remember ever getting around to it - in theory, you would use a fire arrow (or another explosive), fire at your feet at the same instant you jump for a bit of a boost . . . the physics of the TDS engine would prob work better, but I doubt it would work at all in Expert mode.

I think the guy was asking for games OTHER than thief. I can attest to the wonders of Half-Life 1 and 2. In various multiplayer maps and mods, it is possible to stack crates and other things (just like in thief!) to reach out of bounds areas. You can even fall "outside" the map, which leaves you in a desolate wasteland of blackness because the game doesn't render images outside the boundaries.
