I've been playing Thief I & II for the first time recently, and what a breath of fresh air they are compared to today's dumbed-down games for the console crowd. My question is that on Mission 12 of Thief II, where you have to kidnap a Machinist named Cavador, how do you know that Cavador is in Site 5? Early in the mission, you get some sort of clue: a scroll written by Cavador saying he would be at Site 2, 6, 1, 3, 7, 4, and 8, in that order. Is that a red herring? Because Site 5 isn't even mentioned. Is there another clue somewhere that points me to Site 5, or do I have to go through every site? Also, the only way find out which person is Cavador is to knock down every person and pick them up one by one to see what their names are.
I tried to find walkthroughs for Thief II, but perhaps because it is an old game, I didn't have much luck finding helpful info. I found a detailed walkthrough by someone named "Taffer" but when I got to part for Mission 12, he said he hadn't played the mission yet.
Other than minor shortcomings, such as in Thief I where the game doesn't tell you what item you just picked up, these early games show why they were/are landmarks in gaming history.

FYI you have to activate "auto-equip" in the options menu for Thief Gold to show you what you just picked up.

Thanks, you're right. I just checked, and I had auto-equip off in Thief Gold (but not in II).
I really enjoyed the fact that some of the missions are huge and sprawling and yet you are given only very crude maps (this is especially true in Thief I). Of course, that makes sense. This is the ancient times, so you are not supposed to have state-of-the-art mapping or scouting info. Combine this with the large, maze-like levels and the darkness in most surroundings, you have a VERY challenging game, in a good and memorable way. I just don't think the age of millennials would produce a game like this, because the millennials probably wouldn't appreciate it.

I can't help in regards to site 5, but there is a way to retell Cavador from a distance. First, any time the lights in a site are red, he's been there. If they're free, he's yet to arrive. That you already know tho. If I'm right, Site 5 is his quarters or something?
One way to spot him is by eyeing the guards. If you see an unarmed engineer mechanist with a custom mask on his face surrounded by three mechanists walking the same path, that's him.

I've played Thief II three times and I still haven't figured out how to ambush Cavador. I set gas mines for the guards at a spot I can remember him passing, a spot which has some small buildings you can crouch enter and wait in, and wait and wait but sometimes nothing.
I basically either just bump into him randomly while wandering, or he does indeed eventually wander into my pre-laid trap.
But telling him apart from the other Mechanists is the easy part. He is the only one who is wearing a mask covering his entire face.

Even after 12 years there are still things I don't know, despite my playthroughs and all I have read.
So next time I play Kidnap, the trick is to not read any scrolls until I have caught Cavador in Site 5. Or set my trap and then read the activating scroll, and presumably he will eventually pass the trap point and not leave me waiting forever. Thanks for the Lytha link.
