To try to throw this back on topic, could it just be that Basso wanted to be the first to see his girl, and Garrett wasn't going to open the door as she had no clue who he was? Her screaming would probably be slightly detrimental to the mission (unless you blackjack'd everyone in earshot beforehand). I think it's just forcing you to go through it properly and isn't evidence of a lack of skill on Garrett's part.

Your point is noted; however...besides the fact that Jenivere knew the plan... The briefing, the beginning of the mission, Garrett's compliment, the animation to unlock the door, and the lack of player choice to do it him/herself all create little doubt Basso was better at it. As a reward for the help, Basso could have given Garrett some pointers, especially since we never see or hear of Basso ever again. It was more dangerous and risky for Basso to run through the Rumfords' (perhaps he wanted to show himself to be a knight in shining armour, heh heh.) than for him to wait for Garrett to just rescue Jenivere, rather than only assist the lovers by clearing the path.
gar0112: "Well, that's her door. Guess Basso can open it. He's not much of a sneak, but he can sure handle a lock."
From the briefing: "Basso has asked for my assistance on getting her out, since infiltration is my specialty. I make it a policy never to take a job so sentimental, but the Rumford manor could be a lucrative opportunity for a man like me. It would also mean that Basso would owe me a favour. And in this line of work, you can never have too many of those."
We still don't know why Basso is so worth Garrett's trouble. I doubt he busted Basso out of Cragscleft just to impress his sister, and I doubt he would've given up the the chance to cash in two gold wedding rings without some overriding friendship. I propose Basso has gotten Garrett into locked safes and doors that he himself could never get into. Whatever the friendship is based on, they can count on each other. Notice, too, that Garrett opens many more safes in TMA, as well.:D

the power never sent through any portal, or between dimensions. The Eye used to cry out "Master! Master!" to warn him of Garrett or some other danger, too.Does it do so in the game itself or only in the soundfiles? I seem to remember hearing such from the Eye while going through those files, but I don't think I ever had the Eye alert the Woodsie Lord.

Not in-game. Like I said, it USED to. But that was before it was disabled at some point in development with the addition of a single character typed into the schema reference, turning the listed correct sound file, "EYE09.wav", into "EYE009.wav", so the engine couldn't find it.
