Right, well, I'm sorta' new here, but even so, I must say that I love the community here at TTLG Forums. I've recently come up with an idea (I'll get there, hold on :p ) and figured I might as well share it with you all here, because, you know, that's what forums are for, right?
Anywho, enough carryin' on about that...
I'll ask one question here, and after you read it, you may instantly think what I'm thinking. :p
Ready?
How much would it cost to purchase/acquire the rights for the Thief games?
All of us here are Thief fans. Some of us like Thief III, and some of us didn't. A lot of us felt that the first two games in the series had some sort of magic feeling to it; a feeling that you rarely get now-a-days from video games.
Now, wouldn't you like to experience that magical feeling again, but this time, from the designer's viewpoint? :D
What i'm trying to get at goes a tad bit like this: If a whole bunch of us group up and pitch in a (rather large, I assume) sum of money, perhaps we could form our own studio and maybe work on another Thief game - completely as volunteers.
I know I know, you're probably thinking: "Hey, is this guy nuts? Does he have any idea--any idea at all how complicated that would be?!"
Well, I don't blame you. :p See, as stated above, the team would consist mainly of volunteers. After raising the money to get access to Thief properties, we wouldn't, of course, have the cash to actually hire people to make the game. Think if it like those modding communities* you see all the time for different games. Something along the lines of that...
I know the chances of this happening are very very very slim, but... well, you have to believe in it. It is actually possible, folks. And if we don't consider this, maybe we'll never see our friend Garrett back in action again. :(
* I am aware of the modifications out there such as the one for Doom 3, but what I was trying to get at is something totally different.
C'mon fellas', I know that maybe we could at least get somwhere with this. Like I said, you've to to believe. And who knows, maybe some ION Storm or LG studio members will assist us!
Let me know what you think!
Sincerely,
-Dot

As I see it the Thief we all love so much already lives on in the works of the Dromeders out there, and as series (involving Garrett), it has run its course and I believe its better that way (more game cannon on things not related to Garrett would still be interesting though).

There's just no point. If we want to make a new Thief game, we'll do it in Dromed or T3ed or Dark Mod (the latter seems the most promising at this point). No need to try to build a whole freakin' game from the ground up which would NEVER EVER EVER get finished.
Besides, if you somehow managed to get a whopping 1000 of us (the sun will burn out first before you'll find 1000 donors) we'd still have to cough up a hefty $1000 each to just get a measly Mil, which wouldn't do much good anyway.

Other undead/reincarnating questions include:
* speculation about Thief 4 and whether it will ever be released
* people announcing their intention to write their own game engine who have no working code yet; sometimes they're looking for someone else to write it
* theories on whether Garret "liked" Viktoria in T2 or "really liked" her and whether he got any splinters
* dicussion about whether TDS was as good as T1 or T2, and complaints arising from the gameplay differences
This is not to say these topics are taboo, but I don't recommend starting a new one until you've read all the old ones via the "search this forum" button.

Unfeasible I agree, but "no point" I don't. It would be nice to see TDM (for starters) be able to use the canon story, characters etc., even in passing, without fear of reprisal.

I am familiar with certain high profile professional developers who have teams working on multiple projects and successful titles out the door, who nevertheless can't afford to try to wrangle the thief IP from eidos's grasp. It's just too expensive (and too risky).

As far as I know, the authorship rights belonging to EIDOS int. may be sold out for ALL the Thief Universe only, as a whole. They would not even consider the option of selling the rights separately to the movie-makers, for some novel publishers, to some rock or folk music bands, etc. Therefore your efforts will lead you nowhere… EIDOS would not just respond, they would sell the rights for all T-Universe to the BIG substantial companies only, such as Universal Pic., New Line Cinema and so on…
PS These are the facts, it is not fiction. :ebil:

What could be useful would be to get the source for Dromed. That way we could improve it, make it easier to use, stomp on the remaining bugs, allow for bigger resolutions (something I would very much like) etc...

Not true, you never sell all the rights to a franchise as a one lump package, that would be idiotic and have a very low profit margin. Do you honestly think that Paramount acquired the game and comic rights to Tomb Raider when they made the Tomb Raider film? (Which is an Eidos franchise as well)
Different rights have different costs and option lengths, you don't ever put them all togehter in one package, unless it's a very very very desirable and expensive package. Thief doesn't have that kind of noteriety at all.
