Fair enough. When you spoke about them not being 'artists' compared to other devs, it begged the question as to whether all other game developers are, indeed, 'artists'.
I disagree about their last relevant game being Quake, though. In gameplay terms, I think Quake 3 definitely stands as one of their biggest successes. Doom 3 was a shallow romp, that's beyond doubt. But that doesn't mean that the gameplay was bad in and of itself. It was just incredibly and incongruously oldschool.

From the comments. He makes a point, though. Why are they piggy-backing Rage to pre-pre-hype DooM 4? Why should I even bother with Rage, if they are putting their best efforts into the next title?

If that dumb fuck Vorob had bothered to do his homework, he'd know that both Bethesda Game Studios and Id Software are largely going to stick to their stuff and that includes technologies being used in projects already underway.
That doesn't mean that they won't be sharing knowledge and expertise though. Carmack more than happy to let colleagues from Id's various sister studios under the Zenimax umbrella pick his brain.
P.S. Bethesda Game Studios == the developer of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3. BGS != Bethesda Softworks, which is a game publisher owned by Zenimax.
Honestly confusing BGS and Bethesda Softworks can be insulting. The latter have published several questionable games, like Wet and Rogue Warrior.

The last worthy game of id software was the first Quake. id is about technics too much and not nearly enough about art. They simply aren't artists in a broad sense of the word.
That sounds even more hillarious when you find out that id started to care about art, design and story in their games exactly
after the first Quake (except Quake 3 of course).

Uh huh. "Bethesda Game Studios" didn't exist (certainly not in any publically-visible sense, if at all) until TES4:Oblivion. Every prior 'Bethesda'-developed game was developed by "Bethesda Softworks".
That being the case, confusing the two is pretty damned easy if you are remotely familiar with their past output. Myself, I'd class forgetting that they changed to a new name for their last two games as somewhat less "insulting" than forgetting that they ever developed games under the old name.

id software's legendary ability to hype
Quote:
MESQUITE, Texas - June 1, 2000 - id Software(TM), an independent developer of entertainmentsoftware, has started work on the next incarnation of DOOM(TM), one of the most popular computer games of all time. Employing an entirely new 3-D graphics engine, the still untitled project will showcase
id Software's legendary ability to create an over-the-top, story-based single-player experience.
As much entertainment I've had playing their games,
that was not it. I know they must have been LOLing when they were writing up that one, I sure did when I read it back then.

The past bares no relevance in this case. The distinction has been there for some time now and they're two separate entities, no amount of denial will cease this from being fact.

Way to twist words with selective quoting. The point still stands, if one were to flame someone for bullshit like Rogue Warrior then they should know where the blame lies.

This is such an amazingly relevant and interesting point! Thank god we have you two ready to endlessly debate it for us!

This argument is absolutely fucking stupid.
Honestly, though, vorob takes the cake for thinking id Software is now comprised of people who make Elder Scrolls games.
