hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
You misunderstood me.
I know it hasn't been released yet. What I wanted was the ability to pre-load it as opposed to not being allowed to download it until it was released, and there were no adverts or notices or anything that they were going have a pre-load for everybody.

I didn't realize steam had to announce the methods by which their service works every single time a new game comes out.
When DX:HR started a pre-load there was a pop-up saying "buy now! Preload it now!" a couple days before it was released. There was no such advertisement for Rage, and certainly nowhere near every game on steam has a pre-load. It seems to be the exception more than the rule. At least with the games I've bought day one.
Then there is the odd case where they had a pre-load and then it wasn't unlocked when the game released.
In any case, it's finished downloading, so either way I got what I wanted. Unlocks in less than an hour. :)

I didn't misunderstand you. You just communicated improperly.

Multiplayer consists of car vs car battles (no gunning???) and coop Horde style gameplay.
No DM in Rage? Boohoo, go play Quake Live. The game isn't focused on it. Would you rather they built a tacked on Vs. component, like Doom 3's? Better to have none at all than a shitty one which gets you points deducted in the reviews.
Id made solid Campaign focused games long before Quakeworld. Their fanbase isn't solely made up of dudes who want to frag each other all day, like it's perpetually the late '90s.

When did I say that was a bad thing?

I'm not going to piss and moan and whine like the rest of the PC player base on the whole of the internet seems to be doing right now, but this release is pretty botched. I don't know just how bad dead island was, but I think this isn't far behind it.
The textures pop in much like a UE3 game does when you first load a map, except it happens constantly every time you turn the player. Also many people are getting severe graphical glitches, like items flickering and artifacts appearing on screen making it next to impossible to play. I'm getting these glitches myself, although i haven't experienced any of the crashing people have been complaining about. There is also nearly zero options to set your graphics. All you get is resolution, AA, gamma, and one other parameter I don't recall. Other than that it runs as advertised.. steady 60 fps no matter what. I guess I"m waiting for a patch so I can actually play it. Combat is very difficult when your enemies are winking in and out of existence.
The gunplay, however, is quite satisfying. But i only played for 20 minutes. I'll wait for a fix.

Jesus that's pretty bad. I guess they didn't test on enough systems. Very pretty though.

My copy is on a slow boat from England, so I won't have it any time soon. It will probably arrive in about 10-14 days time.
On the plus side this shit might be patched by then and I saved $45 NZD. Boxed PC games are ~$100 NZD locally.

Played a couple of hours, some quick impressions:
* While I haven't had a problem with texture pop-in, a lot of the environment textures are rather shockingly lo-res and flat looking. It's especially jarring as the enemies, NPCs, guns, vehicles etc are all quite sharp.
* Apart from that the visuals are very nice. While it is yet another post-apocalyptic wasteland, every square inch of it has been lovingly crafted and there are tons of neat little touches. Loved the bobble-head Doom guy in Dan's car!.
* The voice acting is good.
* The 'action' music was so terrible (thunderous orchestral stuff) that I turned the music down.
* I'm only in the first area but I don't think it's going to be very open-world. More like a Hexen type hub system but without the getting hopelessly lost part and I'm totally fine with that.
* The gunplay is fantastic. Weapons sound and feel great, and there is a variety of gadgets and ammo types to play with. Enemies are very well animated and stagger, fall, flip, spin and die as appropriate as you fill 'em full of lead. It can get pleasingly hectic at times, especially when you're down in the sewers and mutants are leaping down from everywhere.
All in all I'm enjoying the hell out of it despite the rather disappointing technical aspects.
