Well, I certainly never said I won't buy another id game... I may end up sending Carmack a check when the Doom 3 source comes out to show my appreciation.
... but the other developers (besides Bethesda) gave up on the PC a long time ago.

It's all the console's fault and I'm going to blame PC gamers for it

What the fuck are you on about? It's not about a "misconceived notion" you unbelievable ninny. Developers knew full well their games were outgrowing DVD. Like everything else, it was about MONEY.
And possibly location too. Interestingly enough, at the time it seemed (at least to us in the UK) that locally-produced games were increasingly coming on DVD whereas American-produced ones were still mostly available on CD.

RE: Doom 3. I'm pretty sure they patched in some sort of Carmack voodoo which decompresses sound assets from OGGs. It may've been an exclusive feature for Creative X-Fi and Audigy owners though, I'm not sure.

Yeah, there was an EAX 4 patch. Most people only had EAX 3 at the time, though.

Nope. The Carmack "clusterfuck" article (or Reddit Q&A, I'm not certain) pre-dates the patch.

I'm pretty sure that most Audigy's can be softmodded into better models. I.e. ones which supported EAX 4.

"We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games. That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. "

Not enraged, disappointed. I got my X360. I got a few games for it... I played it for a wile, but the magic just isn't there. I can't pull down the console and spawn monsters to have them fight it out, I can't noclip to explore the levels at all, and I can't even have a Halo deathmatch without real human opponents due to a lack of bots. Why does everything suck now?
Who is to blame for the current gaming situation? Is it the "pirates" who never pay for PC games? Is it the publishers with their never-ending fetish for exercising more control over the user? Is it me for buying 90% of my games used? Perhaps we all are to blame just a bit. How could the situation be rectified?
It can't be the price of the hardware. A gaming-class PC costs a fraction of what it was a decade ago. The hardware isn't improving by leaps and bounds like it was in the late 1990s. Directx9 has been the standard for the better part of a decade. You could count the number of DX10/11 only games on both hands.
