"Why is this game 18GB?
What the fuck am I playing here, the universe?"
That's the compressed version. Just wait until they release the high resolution texture pack... The real question is how long that would take to d/l on the average connection.
"RE: Doom 3. I'm pretty sure they patched in some sort of Carmack voodoo which decompresses sound assets from OGGs. It may've been an exclusive feature for Creative X-Fi and Audigy owners though, I'm not sure."
Yeah, but the source material in Doom 3 was compressed so far that you can easily hear the artifacts during gameplay. I took a look and the vocals were at like 25 kbps IIRC. This is opposed to The Dark Mod, which had many vocals at 239 kbps! (WAY bigger than necessary)

There's another patch on the way which will try to alleviate the blurry texture streaming issues. Hopefully this helps all of the bros who made the mistake of buying AMD Radeon GPUs with their shithouse driver support.

id is continuing to fix the PC version of Rage with the developer promising another patch being released soon to correct an issue with blurry textures.
“We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage,” id's John Carmack promised on Twitter. No date was given for its release.

Yeah, that's kind of the point, if it's 10GB of textures then how come they still suck so bad they need a hi-res patch?
It can't be texture variation because lolconsoles.
(Also that's second hi-res texture pack for PC version after Crysis 2. Wonder if it will become the norm?)

Koki you're retarded and you don't understand. This is meant to resolve an issue where textures visibly take a moment to stream in- i.e. like what a lot of Unreal 3 engine games do- except it happens every time you turn around.
Back in the box.

Hi-res patch? Did you read what I quoted? They're improving texture streaming more or less.

Not just improving texture streaming; there's this from Carmack's Twitter:

We'll still probably get a hi-res texture pack at some point in the future, though. And yes, texture variation (lolconsoles doesn't apply).
I find the current textures beautiful BTW.

It's approximately 17GB. And, yes, it
is all about variation. That is the very idea behind virtual texturing – to allow for every single surface in the game to be unique. Variation (unlimited variation) is the technology's singular purpose.

Long-time Bay Area reviewer Arthur Gies tweeted that there are substantial rumours that Rage may have bombed so hard that it is causing serious shit to go down @ iD. Layoffs, cancelled projects, etc... *gulp*
