[Ragequit] Shogo MAD: judging book by its cover or WHAT IS THIS SH*T??? - by Yakoob

I just had the misfortune of buying Shogo on GoG and after 5 minutes I CANT FUCKING STAND this game. Jesus christ, what the fuck is this shit?
First, the game looks like diarrhea. Don't get me wrong, I am the kind of a person who enjoys SS1 with it's crappy 320x240 resolution, 2D enemies and pixelated everything, but what the fuck is wrong with Shogo? Not only is everything utterly bland, the models look like they are in latter stages of severe anorexia. Why when they run they move faster than they walk, thus effectively rollerskating everywhere? Why is there n omore than 5 colors used in this game? Why when a mech turns in a cutscene it doesn't turn, it fucking insta-snaps 90 degrees? Come on, basic matrix rotation was more than well developed when this game came out. And why does my character always sway left and right in a half crouch semi-sneaky position like an utter retard (his sound and lines clearly match this theory as well).
And wtf is the story supposed to be? I am first greeted by a few emo lines about wah wah evil fellowship killing my family and then a short paragraph that doesn't even make much sense and then random clips of information filled with made up words and organizations - why should I care? Wtf is going on? This really isn't any more than "get in the mech and blast shit."
But hey, you know, after I got through the horrible base stage, I finally get to jump into an awesome mech and TEAR SHIT UP riiiight? Fuck no! First of all, how am I supposed to know what mech is what? I get a one liner like "strong and slow," "fast but weak," the happy medium and one which description didn't even make sense (it does shit!). So I chose the last one and, rock on lets destroy motherfucking enemies and avange my mother/brother/sister/cat, YAYAH.
So I run into my first enemy and - what the fuck is this? I'm dead. In five seconds I am fucking dead. Granted I chose the highest difficulty but what the fuck? The enemies never miss. EVER. Even when they're on the other fucking end of the canyong, they DO NOT MISS. And they also have fucking railguns which tear me into shit in seconds (ironically, using the same weapon on them doesn't do jack shit - what the fuck?).
Oh, you will say, silly Yakoob, you have to use cover. Well, it just so happens that there are generally two types of environemtns in this game
A: narrow fucking corridors that don't let you do SHIT but get pounded by the five fucking mechs on the end of it. And they always pop up when you're fucking halfway through so you can't back out and you can't get out because they're fucking aimbot enanchced by the fact that you CANT FUCKING MOVE ANYWHERE rips you in two seconds. Fucking awesome, pray you don't have one of your fucktarded teammates blocking you from behind cause that's just megarape right there.
B: big ass fucking open space with NOTHING in there. there's no fucking way to deal with the enemy that just rush head first and jump randomly like a retard - except that it doesn't fucking matter cause the enemy can still rape you mid air from 5 million kilometers away. I also love the missions when they spawn you right in front of the enemy so before you can even move YOU ALREADY LOST HALF OF YOUR FUCKING HEALTH.
Not like a cover would be much of a use given the fact the second you reveal even single polygon, the enemy will have hit it already, regardless of being aware of you. So maybe it's a good thing there's no cover because that would just give the enemy more chance to hit you five times before you can even fucking see him.
Great so you really can't do shit in this game than run around like a retard praying the enemy wont hit you (hint: he will) and maybe hide behind your teammates (who seem to be far more immortal than you are) while they're not busy doing
A) Blocking your way in a narrow corridor so you get raped
B) blocking your aim so they get hit instead of the enemy
C) Running in one spot (like literally not even moving but stuck in the run animation) while you get raped by the enemies.
And what the fuck is up with the little human soldiers? Not only do they literally pop out of ether five feet in front of you, they're even a worse bitch than the mechs. Not only do their puny machineguns are apparently loaded with five tons of fucking molten lava that tears through your armor with a smile on its fice, they're also a fucking bitch to actually hit cause they're SO FUCKING TINY, run faster than you and, god fucking forbit you don't hit them square in the face cause then they'll just run around laughing and raping you and your mother. And don't give me the "aim at the ground around them!" bullshit cause half the time they're on some fucking high up ramps running back and forth requiring you to precisely hit five rapidly moving pixels that NEVER STOP SHOOTING AT YOU, EVER.
Jesus fucking Christ what the fuck were these people thinking? I am a big FPS player and consider myself really skilled but what the fuck, I rage quit this shit three times in the past 10 minutes.

Yyyyyeah it's not aged well. Neither has Blood 2. Those were not Monolith's better years.

The game was made with the mindset that high difficulty should actually be difficult.
It's also quite possible that the mecha you picked doesn't suit your playstyle.

Ah, I never really liked SHOGO so I loved that rant.
100% agreed on the difficulty; it's pretty much impossible. I think they just slapped that there for laughs.
The story, writing and characters are all very animu, so no surprises there.

You said that again. Care to explain what do you mean by it? Was the game any better when it was released and it magically deteriorated into crap? I'm curious.

Well there's a difference between "these enemies are tough and challanging and require me to use my reflexes and wit to overcome them" and "you just spawned and we already RAPED you, haha, go hide behind something OH WAIT YOU CANT"

No you're not, but I'll explain anyway. I have Shogo laying around, and when I first played it, I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but good- and I liked some of the scenery. (Shogo also beat the shit out of Blood 2, which wasn't very good even at the time it came out.)
But these days? Oh my god, I can't even look at it. It's just so
clunky.

By the way, I was going through FEAR's archives lately to get the music, and I noticed the Shogo theme was in there. Any idea if it's used anywhere in the game?

It's been years since I played Shogo, but I didn't play it when it first came out. I think I first played it about 5 years ago or something like that.
Even at that point, the game was very dated in many ways. It's one of Monolith's oldest games. And it's from a time before they were considered a noteworthy developer. NOLF 1 was their first game that didn't really "suck". Though, I guess some would argue that Blood 1 was probably their first decent game. Since NOLF they've rarely struck out. (The Matrix Online and Contract JACK would be the exceptions.)
Since the game was so dated by the time I played it, I guess I didn't have many expectations of it. It was okay, an average game. Far from the worst I've ever played, but hardly the best. Still, it had a few fun moments.
Fortunately, I picked it up in jewel case form for about $10. It isn't worth more than that.

It played on a radio in one of the final levels. I don't remember the exact location, but you had to turn off a gas pipe in order to get past a fire somewhere near there.

That's 'cuz Blood 1 is absolutely fucking fantastic.
