GoldSource != Source.

"Look at the staircase, it looks very blocky and polygonal compared to any other game coming out these days." It's a fucking
staircase. In the absence of any further clarification as to what you meant, naturally I'm going to assume that you're whining that the staircase looks like a staircase. So no, my comment about slides is perfectly valid.
So you are agreeing with me that a staircase looks like a staircase and it is no different than any staircase in any other game? Well then - why are you creaming yourself over it?

No, you shitspook, I'm pointing out that you're complaining that a staircase looks like a staircase. I'm not creaming myself over the staircase specifically, christ did you even watch the whole trailer? Most of what we see in the vid is of a visual quality equal to that of current games, despite what you insist. Point to me one game, one game that looks better than that. Crysis doesn't count.

I really like the outdoor scenes. Beautiful.

Stalker, Mirror's Edge, Oblivion (especially foliage), Modern Warfare 2, AVP3, Bioshock, need I keep going?

As much as it's nice and well done it also begs the question why.
Stalker in another engine with half life's default game mechanics only succeeds in destroying any atmosphere that could have been possible. Atmosphere is no atmosphere without vulnerability?
It's a pretty face certainly considering the engine (although in other engines like yakoob said it could be a lot more) and they've done a good job with the lighting. At this present time though it doesn't look like the ai or game mechanics will be rebuilt from scratch, and this is why it will not work. A magazine to the chest to kill a human being does not an immersive believable experience make.

I think this looks fantastic, even the stairs! :D

What makes you think that this sort of thing is hard-coded into the engine, or in fact into any engine? Damage would be something that's set with parameters, so making enemies and/or the player character more vulnerable would be much more easy than getting the visuals right.
inselaffe on 22/1/2010 at 16:12
Yes, but there's a lot more than just that and who's to say that's their intention anyway - perhaps they want the stalker world but with those kind of game mechanics - it's just with those mechanics, any atmosphere is very superficial. There is a lot more to change to get the player to feel vulnerable than just that - to do it well you would basically have to change the core gameplay. What I am saying is that although it's not necessarily difficult to change damage parameters, very few mods bother to do a proper total conversion in that way. Movement would have to be changed a great deal for a start too. All this is not simply parameter changes but implementation of a lot of small details and systems in order to give it more feel. When the gun model appears to be taken out of stalker and the sound and muzzle flash seemingly default half life 2 it is hardly great advertisement in that regard. I appreciate they may not be so far down the line in that area though - but then they chose to put that in the video - it could have been just landscape shots.

I personally think it will fail as the combine really have no place in a post-nuclear fallout Russia :mad:
