I was just thinkin'...
I've seen that a lot of folks on this board really liked the zombies and/or haunts in TDP. So much so that they liked TDP more than TMA because it had more of them.
Well, I've got a wild guess as to why TMA cut back on them so much: I've only met 2 other people in-person who played TDP and/or TMA. All three of us hated the zombies. So much so that one of us simply quit playing TDP, and I simply skipped to the next level whenever the briefing would mention anything along the lines of "haunted", "spooks" or "ghosts".
Now, I'm not here to start a "zombies rule/suck" thread, and I think I wouldn't have minded the undead so much if I knew then what I read just a few days ago on this very message board (being able to kill 'em with flashbombs, backstabbing haunts, etc). And a sample of 3 is hardly representative. But I wonder if just maybe Looking Glass was hearing complaints from other people about the zombies, and hence decided to scale them back for TMA.
Just a random thought.

It's not a random theory, it's a well known fact.

It's always funny when people talk about how the undead was their least favorite aspect of Thief, yet the most popular FMs tend to be full of them.

the undead are scarier, so people think they don't like them, but what they don't realise is.... they like being scared!

Especially the zombies are a very convenient gameplay element. I've learnt to like them.

once you realise that zombies are slow, easily outwitted and won't chase you more than about 20 feet, they're just not scary any more. :(

Haunts, however...

I really liked the undead. The zombies were a little overused in places (Bonehoard springs to mind), though. The ones I really couldn't stand were the bugbeasts and the ape/rat things.

For me it's less a case of hating undead and more about loving the actual mansion-thieving, and the like. Plus the undead levels are more likely to have those damn spiders

I guess its perfectly plausible for that to happen. Remember TDP was a inital game, they were diving into a new marketplace. They didnt know if the game would be a bomb or sucess.. so when it did rather well, like all businesses, they try to find out from people what they liked/disliked in order to make more money next time. Thats just what they did im certain. Thats why TMA has fewer of those dead guys since maybe they realised that alot of people didnt enjoy playing against them.
But then when TDS came out they still had zombies so... maybe they decided to put it back in. But in any event, this is a BUSINESS so they are going to give us what we want aslong as we pay them. Mm..
