ok so I reinstalled thief ds a few days ago. I started playing it and sometimes just out of nowhere it crashes to desktop. any ideeas why or is this something that would've been fixed in official patches if ttlg would still be alive?

I do not get crashes to the desktop, but every once in a blue moon it will freeze with a display driver issue. Its the engine that is the problem. They fixed it alot from when it was used for Deus Ex 2, but it still has bugs. You may have to put up with it like I do the freezes. Hopefully it is not a constant thing. If there is a fix, its in the faq, but I do not think there is. Someone want to confirm this?

TTLG is still quite alive. After all, you just posted on it :p. You probably mean LGS (Looking Glass Studios). And if they were still alive then it wouldn't have mattered, since Ion Storm made the game, not them :p.
ANYWAYS, I used to have the same problem. I can't remember what started it, but it didn't go away until I re-installed the game.

well, I'm gonna get myself a new video card and some more RAM... allthough I'm not sure it will help. I guess I'll just reinstall it.... again. and sorry for the mixup betwen LGS and TTLG.:p
