Early 3D games were mostly various types of sims, so yes, they were complex. Just look at every 3D game Looking Glass did prior to Thief-- Ultima Underworld, Terra Nova, Flight Unlimited, System Shock... all enormously more complex than Thief.

They were partly 3d and all the complex stuff was 2d.

man what

What do you mean all the complex stuff was 3D? UU had 3D barrels, the cornerstone of every FPS ever made, long before the FPS even became a household name. Doom came long a good while after and had 2D barrels, and so did everything else until Descent and Quake. Though, um, I don't remember if Descent had barrels. Did it?
Wait, what I meant to say is this: what the fuck are you even on about, Scott, you trolling halfwit? Sprites vs. polygons isn't even what people are talking about here.

you trolling halfwit.
I have a master's degree and I'm a rockstar, you nobody. So you're saying that pre Thief and even pre Doom 3d games had more complex design than Thief - that's the biggest bullsh!t I have read this week, congratulations.
Sulphur on 30/4/2011 at 16:38
You're a puerile, ignorant walking wankathon that thinks quoting a master's degree on the internet means anything, so I guess you've got the rockstar bit down pat. :thumb:
And System Shock and UU did have more complex design than Doom, you airhead.

And you obviously don't have a sense of humor. I don't have a master's degree btw

I gave up discussing the point a while ago because you've clearly missed it. Your argument is asinine, you have no idea what ZB was talking about, have an extremely limited grasp on the functionality of game design and game engines and the history of them, and I've got better things to do than explain all of this to you. Continue stewing in your obliviousness.

And dude, what is that article even supposed to be about? Is it cut or is it just Edge being Edge again?

Everyone but you is talking about the complexity of
the gameplay, not the renderer.
