It's pretty symbolic that simple melee weapons like these were still used in the first world war...
This is not completely correct: knives is still used in hand-to-hand fights. I watched a picture of on guy I know that work as Nato soldier, where he has a Rambo-like knife.

I know. But melee weapons of any kind are far less used in contemporary warfare.

Ah, that surreal little sci-fi short made by Bagiński, right ? :D I've seen it a few times. Short but awesome.

First of all, it's 'knives', second, knives are pretty much the only melée weapons used nowadays.

Sorry but I have the brain in overheat, due to study, so some error of translation can happen. I provide to correct it.
Some state still uses blades, and circa every state uses some kind of bayonets attachable to the fusil.

Knives which can be used as bayonets, but probably no bayonets per se. Anyway, also saw it in a WWI movie some weeks ago that the soldiers were told to use the spade as a much more useful weapon. After all there are only limited options when it comes to melee fighting.
