Heh heh.
Kidding aside, they eventually figured out what was happening. Crows pecked out their kidneys, and left 'em alive with the nasty wounds. Then gases from infection and contaminants entering the wounds would build up in their body cavities over a long period, and the gases would rupture them explosively. What a way to go.
