Outstanding.
It gives me the creeps though. At moments, I see 2 people cut in half : their legs continuing to walk without the rest of the bodies. :cheeky:
You would say that. :ebil: What getting ideas............;)

Okay then, I guess it's not just me.

The "big dog" thing is scary. Definitely scary.
It makes me think of Deus Ex, actually. And maybe a bit of Half-Life 2. Not just because of name -- after it started to prance like a pony, I almost expected it to demand a pat on its head (and it doesn't even have one!). Any pretty young female engineers around?
Also, that overlenghty, silly trailer movie from some console game (Metal Gear Solid 4?) comes to mind.

The thing that makes me wonder especially with this Phoenix Hexapod (not sure if it's remote-controlled, though), are the superfluous movements which it shouldn't make if there were sensors attached at every end. :erg: An animal may try and look around, but a robot should only do what seems necessary to reach its goal.

Keep in mind that that one was built by some guy in his workshop with off-the-counter parts, though. You can't expect too much sophistication in its responses - I thought the movements alone were pretty amazing, very spider-like at times.

My understanding is that most of what it does is scripted. The instructions are simple though and translated through its quite complex inverse kinematic based systems. So you tell it to walk, it walks, tell it to turn at a certain speed, it turns, keeping balance and adjusting etc automatically. More specific movements I don't know. I presume you can tell it to raise its front legs and the rest reacts accordingly, but you probably have to be specific about making the front legs wiggle.
So yeah, it's nothing like as autonomous as the big dog.

OK, the Hexapod is very cute. The Big Dog, however, I expect to turn around and stomp the guy who kicked it at some point in the future.

That BigDog is really creepy. It looks like it's imitating a deer in some kind of sick, perverted way.
I don't think it'd be too good on stealth missions either, what with that awful buzzing noise that can be heard from a hundred yards.

I could imagine it as a movie sequence with this old pointe: Two scouts lying in the grass, looking through their spyglasses and seeing a couple of soldiers and this miniature AT-AT stumbling across the earth: "Well, they're either extremely brilliant or extremely... owned."

Totally.
Now, since this thing can hold a load of hundreds of pounds and do that, when are we going to see somebody riding it for kicks?
