I avoided this game for the longest time because it seemed high on gimmicky gun realism and low on gameplay, but I'm pleased to find that there's actually a story to it and the gameplay is very challenging and fun. There's you, a gun, randomly generated levels filled with turrets and drones that can kill you with one shot, and 11 tapes you need to collect. To borrow a phrase from dethtoll, this game is all about being "an ordinary scared motherfucker with a gun", in fact I believe this game might be the purest expression of that phrase I've yet to play. The cumbersome nature of handling your weapon actually adds to the tension and your feeling of frailty. When you first start out you'll have a hell of a time making the thing go "bang bang!", but after a while you get used to the routine of taking out your clip, holstering your gun, adding more bullets to the magazine, putting it back into your pistol and cocking it every time you need to reload. Doing all this is complicated enough when there's no enemies around, but try doing all that when a whirring drone is just around the corner and closing in fast. Most of the time you'll end up with a face full of sizzling robotic death before you can get the clip back in, but when you do manage it, I swear to God you'll feel like Josh Brolin in that scene in No Country For Old Men where he clears out and reloads his gun just in time to shoot the dog. It's fucking sublime.

I've played it for 2 hours and I'm starting to get a grip on it. Just now I managed to find 7 of the tapes but then the damn game went and crashed on me. Have to start over from the beginning! Never mind, I'm getting pretty good at spotting the telltale lights of turret-scanners and recognizing the beeps and boops of nearby drones. I'll find all 11 tapes soon enough.
Anwyay, cool game. I'd especially recommend it to all you masochists who enjoyed Teleglitch! Reminds me more of that than anything else. :)

I own this game, but haven't gotten around to trying it, yet. :p

edit:
OK, found what key does what, but it took me a minute(literally, not figuratively) to figure out that the "help" automatically updates based on what you have selected. Not particularly intuitive.
I got lucky on one spawn, and got a 1911 with a magazine and a flashlight. I was able to take out about a half dozen turrets, but only found one tape. That run ended when a turret spotted me at long range.

I've had a lot of fun with this game. There are three weapons now and they each handle pretty differently. As someone who shoots regularly I really like how perfectly it captures the awkwardness of weapons handling in real life, especially with weapons like revolvers. The narrative is simple but there's some interesting depth to the theme it's presenting that I think becomes apparent as you listen to the tapes. Overall, while it looks and feels a lot like a student Unity project, I think it's worth the couple of bucks I got it for.
Oh yeah, the enemy damage model is great. There have been some awesome moments when I shoot a turret, it aims at me, I'm sure I'm dead, then realize that I disabled the gun and it can't fire. On the other hand, I've had times when I shoot the ammunition feed, then get shot and killed by the bullet still in the chamber.

You can get Receiver for free (

I encourage one and all to pick it up and give it a go. It's a first person shooter done as a simulator rather than an action game. Very interesting, very tense, difficult as hell.
