I figure the title is cliche, but perhaps this is a good place to ask the question.
I'm thinking that there has to be some game out there that is
-simultaneous multiplayable on the same display (TV or monitor) using gamepads or something like that
-not splitscreen, probably a 2D field but games with automatically zooming cameras work too
-fairly easy to pickup, but not a dumb game (otherwise Gauntlet ___ would fit here. I used to think Gauntlet would be a good game, but there's no point in pumping quarters at the arcade for it, and no challenge at home.)
Geometry Wars 2 would fit here well but alas, I've no Xbox 360 and don't want to buy one. Mutant Storm was another Robotron clone for the PC, and it had 2 player, but I want to know if anyone else has something.

A little more detail regarding genre might lead to sharper recommendation, but have you considered (

Overlord with the Raising Hell expansion is enough content to keep one busy for a while, and is readily available on STEAM, D2D and the like.
Edit: MP has at least two modes, including both co-op survival and VS.

Um, genre... 2D action game? Not that it has to be 2D, but that's what I'm thinking about.
Bionic Commando is feasible; I didn't know that was for PC. Up to 4 players would be a plus though. Also rather important: that people won't feel less inclined to play if I'm more experienced than them. That kills a lot of multiplayer games for me.

The recent Lego [Blah] games work like this, I think? IIRC, you can even have the second player drop in and out at any time, which is nice. Judging by the Indiana Jones demo they might be too much on the 'dumb' side, but lots of people rate them as great co-op games. Especially the second Star Wars game (not sure how much Star Wars nostalgia plays into that; I'm just repeating what I've heard). There are demos, so you may as well check one out.

Way WAY far on the dumb side. Something more challenging.

Oh, Crimsonland has two-player-on-one-'puter. It works best if you can plug in a second mouse, I believe.
Um, it's a 'simple' top-down arcade arena shooter, but it's a class one, with great action, and a nice sense of humour.
Check it out. It's well worth the asking price, IMHO.
