Breath of Fire for SNES?
It's one of those I obtained but never had time to play, so can't comment it it's any good. I literally just fired it up for the first time.
But hey, tile based and YOUR VILLAGE IS ON FIRE. A winning combination.

Those strangely accented-looking lowercase 'g's make me imagine the entire text being spoken in a faux French accent. Awesome!
I remember playing Phantasy Star 4 and being quite fond of it. I certainly liked it the most of all Genesis Phantasy Stars.

I know the OP said that he was a bit burnt out of open-worlds, but Xenoblade Chronicles does seem to be da shiznit according to almost everyone and their mum.
:)
Or are you just looking for old school jrpgs?

The Paper Mario games are rather fantastic, especially the Thousand Year Door for GameCube.
Some of Icemann's suggestions that I'd second are: Alundra, Arc the Lad Collection and Star Ocean 2.
I rather enjoyed some of the Shin Megami Tensei games for PS2; specifically Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2.
And I've enjoyed *some* of the Tales games. Most specifically:
Tales of Eternia/Tales of Destiny 2 (PS1/PSP)
Tales of Symphonia (GC)
Tales of the Abyss (PS2/3DS)
Some other recommendations:
Most Dragon Quests released in the last few years (8 for PS2 and 4, 5, 6 + 9 for DS)
Skies of Arcadia: Legends (GC)
Radiata Stories (PS2)
And as mentioned in the other thread, I'm a sucker for the recent Ys games, though those are very action-oriented.
And Valkyria Chronicles is brilliant if you haven't played it and own a PS3.

The first was alright, but Breath of Fire 2 with the not-guffed-up with engrish retranslation patch is the far better game. If you want a good, ole fashioned down to the nuts and bolts JRPG, then you can't go wrong with it or Breath of Fire 3 for the PS1.
But what I really suggest you try is...

* Alundra (PS1) - Best described as a Zelda: Link to the Past style RPG. Better than Link to the Past, which I don't say lightly.
I've mentioned this game here a thousand times before. But you know what? It's worth it. Alundra easily numbers among my favorite games of all time. It is so, so damn good.
If you've got a PS3, then get it there. It's worth however much they're charging for it. If you don't, I'll see about hopping on steam tonight, and send you the disc image I made of the game. That's right. I'm openly admitting to wonton casual piracy, just so you'll be able to play it.

Try Persona 3 or 4, they're both a bit different.

That's a pretty poor justification for stealing from those nice Chinese restaurant people. Do you have any idea how long it takes to make one of those?

This is Renz we're talking about - he'll scrounge food from anywhere :)
It's not Japanese, but (
http://www.talesofgames.com/barkley/) Barkley, Shut Up & Jam: Gaiden may be worth a shot (and it's also free). It's a light-hearted game but presented so seriously that you start to wonder whether the developers really are
that passionate about basketball.
