Wait - you're meant to defeat him? I tried a couple of times before seeing a note that basically told me to run away so I did. Oops.
You did the right thing. The first time you see him, you're supposed to run. You don't have to fight him until the second time.

How is the controller set up? I think the gesture menu is the select key, which shouldn't be anywhere near the buttons you'll be using most throughout the game.
Though if you're at the part where the skeletons resurrect themselves, then that means you somehow made it past the graveyard, ran down the long steps along the side of the cliff, went into the dark, scary cave, managed to get past the exploding sprites without dying, and went into the catacombs. If you did all that while having controller issues, then you're pretty damn hardcore. I couldn't even get near the catacombs until a good while after I rang the first bell.
The skeletons in the graveyard come back to life after about a delay of ~30 seconds, I think? Including the big bruiser bugger. A divine sword of some sort puts them down for good. The catacombs are after that, and definitely not for the faint of heart or someone who's just starting off.

Not from what I remember. Unless they changed things in a recent patch, the ones in the graveyard stay dead.

It's totally possible to take him down that first go-round. You get a bonus for it I think.
Gawd, that'd take forever to do. When you first run across him, the broken sword you've got only does about 2 damage to him. Altogether, I think he has about 700 HP.

No, pretty sure they come back to life. You might have killed a necromancer in the Catacombs before you popped back out for air, that keeps them down permanently too, I think -- I haven't ventured too far in there yet.
Renzatic on 13/7/2013 at 10:23
Nope. I've gone through the graveyard and killed everything there long before I got my first divine weapon or ventured into the catacombs. There might be a couple there who do come back, but most of them stayed down.

I'd totally boot the game up and play it to prove you wrong, but I don't want to trek all the way back there just to spank your ass. We settle this PvP, nao.

IRL fisticuffs or I ain't coming.
Also, I'm right at the firelink shrine in the PS3 version. I'll go find out NAO!

hahahahaha you're trying the graveyard first??
man do you hate yourself? Go back to the bonfire and look for some stairs leading up around the cliffs towards an aqueduct. The game kind of forces you to go that way because trying to deal with the skeletons and beyond now is just suicide.
Well, I seemed to have bypassed all those areas and the ones that Renzatic mentioned. After speaking with a guy that tells me not to bother him but gives me a copper coin as a good will gesture, I made a leap of faith nearby into a darkened room with an exit that lead to 3 chests filled with useful items. The only exit from that area is to leap down from between a gap in the rocks on to some stairs below which lead to a graveyard.

No, you'll get a chance again later.

It's activated by clicking in the left stick which is pretty easy to do on my Spartan 360 controller. There's no software apart from a generic driver so as far as I know I don't have any way of changing it.

Yep, just run past the skeletons and keep going up and westwards, and you'll be back at the firelink shrine bonfire.

Okay, I'm typing this on my iPad while I stand patiently in the graveyard.
First, the obvious. Killing 4 skeletons in a row straight out of the Asylum with all my newbie gear, nickel and diming them to death and only having to take a single quaff of my estus flask qualifies me for some sorta motherfucking badass of the year award.
YOU STAND IN AWE!
Next, the not so obvious. I've stood over the remains of the first two skeletons for at least 3 minutes, and they have yet to come back. So it's only the ones in the catacombs who do that.
