Arx Fatalis. I like to compare it to Deus Ex 1; it is maybe too claustrophobic, but have intriguing story and flexible "world" with multiple ways to deal with obstacles. And like DX significant role plays skill development, I could only complain that magic is "too good" and give so much fun and freedom in hacking environment (like casting flying eye through closed door, then casting telekinesis atop of it).

Sorry, my list wasn't meant to be exhaustive. I was trying to avoid putting in older games like KOTOR and Arx Fatalis, which I have already played. My inclusion of some older games than that has understandably added to the confusion.
I'm pretty much sold on the idea of getting Dark Souls after reading all the passionate endorsements, but will wait until next week just in case the Steam sales commence then. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Make of it what you will, but any fan of crpg owes it to themselves to conquer Wizardry VIII, if you havent done so already. You will not regret anything about the decision to play this classic. Im talking hours and days and weeks and months of pure rpg fun!

The QTE's are basically a reward for the directly preceding hard-as-balls-but-not-hard-as-dark-souls boss fights.

Yeah, I'll get it. I've played a ton of From Software games over the years, and they've never let me down.
But first I've gotta come down from my PS3 kick, which means playing through MGS3 HD and the Uncharted series. I don't want to get anything else until I beat those. I don't want to be saddled with a Duck-Con 1 backlog of games. It'll be the first game I buy after I finish off Uncharted 3.
