If you've got a mouse with 2 side buttons, it works quite nicely. Weak attack on the top buttons, strong attack on the side buttons. Usually means weak/strong/block/parry - by the time I beat the PC version, I was more comfortable with the K/M controls then I had been with the PS3 version.
Analog movement is pretty much irrelevant. Fine angular control is achieved with mouse look. You miss out on fine speed control - but in this game, you only need 2 speeds: as fast as I can go without using stamina, and OHFUCK!OHFUCK!MOVE!
The place where K/M takes a big dump is bow usage. While it should've been a hell of a lot easier then with a gamepad, the fucked up reverse acceleration makes fine adjustments near impossible. You practically have to use the gamepad emulator plugin for those moments where you need to snipe. Like those goddamned Dragonslayer archer knights in Anor Londo.

I'm a kb+mouse devotee, but can't even imagine playing DS with anything but gamepad since I tried it, and this is from someone who has never owned a console and flat out didn't get gamepads until DS. I'm not saying kb+mouse are invalid, just that not being used to gamepad shouldn't put someone off of giving it a go for this game.

On the whole controller issue, thought this was interesting from DS's Amazon page:
Quote:
From the ManufacturerNOTE: The use of this game
requires additional hardware, specifically a PC-compatible game controller. Several of our customers have reported incompatibility with standard input devices like keyboard and mouse. Our tech team recommends the Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows.
All this controller stuff aside, should I play Demon's Souls before Dark Souls, or is that not necessary?

It's worth playing, but not necessary at all if you want to jump straight into Dark Souls. They're entirely separate series, connected only by similar gameplay styles, and the fact they're made by the same developer.
Really, as great as I'm finding Demon's to be, it does feel kinda like the beta for Dark, which is a much better, more polished, and considerably larger game overall.

For someone who hasn't played either, I think this would be misleading. You could also come at it from the other direction, i.e. while the two games have different plots and characters,
Dark Souls still plays like an improved sequel to
Demon's Souls. They're recognisably the same game - more so than, say,
Deus Ex and
Human Revolution. Your comment about the latter being a sort of beta of the former strikes me as the more apt comment.

Besides. Being elitist about control schemes is just stupid in this day and age. Gamepads aren't expensive and unless you're really fucking boring and only play old PC games where a keyboard
is recommended (and gamepads aren't supported anyway) you'll be glad to have it.
The problem is that I can't really think of any other PC games where it's required. I remember buying one years ago to play one of the Tomb Raider sequels on PC and after that I probably only ever used the controller once or twice again. Times have obviously changed a lot since then however most games that have been ported to PC generally work ok and if they don't it's generally a case of a bad port than anything else.
That being said, behold the might Spartan! I just got this budget controller from EB for $19 -- now all I need is a game to go with it!

I don't think I'll ever get this "I'm a PC, therefore controllers are of the devil!" stuff... I'd say that about 1/3 of the games I play on PC work better with controllers than with KB+M, at least some aspects. Racing games? Gamepad. Most third-person games, e.g. Assassin's Creed or Arkham City? Gamepad. Even the car sequences in GTA IV or flying helicopters in the Arma games - gamepad.

If it's beneficial that you control the camera yourself a gamepad falls far behind the KB/M setup for me. I simply can't use the damn analog stick to control the camera while moving and attacking, the buttons frequently aren't set up for that to be physically possible. Of course bad ports often have mouse acceleration, which makes the mouse equally horrible to use.

Yeah, some games (assassin's creed definitely springs to mind) are unarguably supposed to be played with a gamepad and are painfully stupid without it: I think I wanted to 'climb a ladder', but pressed the wrong combination of 'non-aggressive mode + forward + alt-use + fellate templar' or whatever, and instead leapt five metres to the right and stabbed an old lady in the throat. When even the in-game UI looks like a D-pad, it's probably supposed to be played with something that has a D-pad.
Still, I feel exactly the same way as wingedkagouti about view control: I'm just fucking terrible at using analog sticks to control my view, whereas mouse feels incredibly intuitive.

I think it's important to make that distinction: what is a bad control scheme, and what is us not being used to the scheme/controller? I was crap at using a controller for a few months, and I'm still not likely to win any matches of Street Fighter using one, but with some kinds of games I would say that controllers are definitely superior to KB+M - even though at the beginning anyone watching me play one of them before I got used to using a gamepad would've thought that I had some brain damage interfering with my motor skills. Still, even with improved gamepad-fu, I'd still balk at playing FPSes with a controller. In general, if a game requires precise aiming (not all games do or should), I prefer using my mouse. (Having said that, I'm finding Spec Ops decidedly less frustrating with a gamepad than with KB+M, but that seems to be a bad port of the controls.)
People, especially on the web, seem to be much more likely to say that control scheme A sucks (with generous use of "dumbed down" and "consoletards" thrown in), rather than saying that they're simply not skilled at A or that they have a purely personal preference for scheme B. Too many idiots feel the need to turn any and every personal preference into some sort of internet jihad that allows them to tout their own superiority. It's actually quite refreshing to hear people say that they don't like using controllers because they're not particularly good at it.
