Elfen Lied lost me at the opening which was oozing with inane pretentiousness.
and this is retarded 13-year-old material, how?
seems to me you wanna age that up about 10 years
Koki on 9/4/2012 at 12:08

Just because something is animated and from Japan doesn't automatically make it anime. That's like saying all black and white movies from France are Noir. Anime is a genre and is thus "characterized by a particular style, form or content"(Merriam-Webster). Do try to point out similar styles, forms or contents in both Grave of the Fireflies
and Naruto. And Grave of the Fireflies is an overrated soccer mom tearjerker.
Edit: Fuck! Sorry, fine, misinterpretation (bad reading) on my part. Fuck off, call the police, I don't care.

As demagogue pointed out, the japanese themselves use the term as a catch-all for animation and since they're so nation-centered and culturally inbred, by 'animation' they mean mostly their own (whatever Wikipedia says). Including Grave of the Fireflies. I don't really see what kind of animated work originating from Japan could be used as a counter-example by being obviously not anime*.
That word sucks anyway.
@Neb: Tekkonkinkreet is absolutely worth the watch.
*that would be interesting so please do tell if you have an example

I think I got his logic. All anime is crap. If a given anime is not crap, then it is not anime.
Or perhaps, who gives a fuck it's just semantics. Recommend me some Japanese cartoons. Better?

I love when people play the [insert non-anime full motion picture title here] card and then go back to watching the very retarded 13-year old material they claim anime isn't. Like you did with FMA, .hack, Elfen Lied or Slayers. .
So basically you resort to ad-hominem without refuting my actual point that Grave of the Firefiles is indeed a good piece proving that not ALL anime is retarded chibi ninjas (aka naruto)?

How so? I read it the same way you originally did. The two works look distinctly anime, so if challenging that wasn't what Koki intended, why did he bring up such a potential distinction in the first place?

His post was saying: if Graveyard is so anime, name me one similar use of style between Graveyard (ex hypothesi not anime) and Naruto (typical anime) (which by the way is what my response post did anyway ... the eyes, the mouth, the movements, the flash cuts, the dialog, the chibi faces. But yeah, I'm like you, can't you just look at Graveyard and see it on the face of it?).
The way I first (mis)read it was, name me some anime style in both Graveyard and Naruto, as if both were not anime, which I then excuuuused myself from.

Well I just finished My Neighbor Totoro, reminding me why I don't like Miyazaki. The guy is great at creating beautiful fantastic worlds, but rather sucks in doing anything with them : | also lulz at the English translation basically shoving dialog that actually isn't there and over explaining things because "dem englishspeakers be dum lulz"

No. I am just pointing out that, even if we go by jap definition of anime being all things animated(in that case go wild and watch Shrek the anime) and include your Grave of the Fireflies, it's still a moot point since you won't be watching it but a bunch of kiddie crap.
