Recommend me some relatively modern PC games... - by lost_soul

I recently got and installed Windows 7 and I am interested in some modern (post 2006) cheap PC games. Got any suggestions?
*games I loved*
Deus Ex, The Nameless Mod, Thief 1, Unreal, Duke Nukem 3D, Sin, Team Fortress Classic
*games I liked*
No One Lives Forever, Half-life, Dreamfall, Prey, Doom 3, Quake 4, Penumbra series
The only rules are that the game should be under $15, (preferably under $10) and should not install hidden services or drivers on my system. Bioshock looks interesting for <$5, but the reviews are scaring me. What about F.E.A.R? I tried to download the free MP version a wile ago but it wouldn't let me register for a CD key and it was thus a waste of bandwidth.
I'm liking Windows 7 very much BTW... and I'm currently working my way through Dreamfall.

I gotta tell you: most people don't pay attention to that kinda stuff. Hell, considering the amount of stuff I just carelesslly install I probably have the CIA, the KGB and the Girl Scouts spying the hell out of my computer right now.
Anyway, that's a very first person-centric list. Have you played Amnesia yet? That's a good one. You might enjoy Cryostasis as well.

Fallout 3, Stalker = a must and see you in half a year ;) Bioshock = great, don`t listen to non believers (managed to spoil 1/3 of the game for me), FEAR = superb shooter, weak horror. Borderlands.
Also Boiling Point/Xenus 2/The Precursors - if you`re brave enough.
EDIT: going out now to pick me a copy of Cryostasis...

Far Cry 2 is an under-rated gem.

That, or it's a repetitive, irritating piece of crap - you decide!
No, really, it's pretty much love/hate.

Assault on Dark Athena is pretty damn good. It also comes with a remake of Escape From Butcher Bay, which is definitely worth playing if you're into Thief.

Holy shit, you're not running linux! I am shocked...
Looking at my Steam game list..
MODERN suggestions:
Bioshock - give it a chance, its only a fiver. And dont approach it wanting SS3. Approach it as an FPS with a few twists, decent story, and great atmosphere. And in those departments, it totally delivers.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - the first in the series of modern CoDs, and the one that did it right. Yes the gameplay can get frustrating, but the set pieces are pretty awesome and do capture the "you are the hero in the action movie!" vibe. And they're pretty varied, so each scenario feels fresh. And the game looks superb on highest settings too. Cant comment on the sequels, tho.
Fear (2) - Personally I didnt like it as much as dethtoll everyone else, but its a well recognized title in the PC FPS scene and you might like it if you like atmospheric corridor or tactical shooters (which you seem to)
Fallout 3 / Last Vegas - only played the first, but genuinely liked it. From your list, you will either love it for its atmosphere and options, or hate it for the "potential it failed to live up to" like most NMAers
Mirror's Edge - you must have heard about it already. Superb gameplay, superb graphics, superb art direction. More of a First-Person-Platformer than a shooter tho.
Red Orchestra (the new one coming out soon) - Wasnt sure from your list but you may like the super-realistic FPSes, so give this one a try when its out. Or check out the old one to get a feel for the gameplay (or try Operation Flashpoint)!
NOT modern suggestions but may still tax your system or are simply THAT good
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - my favorite game of all time (!) If you love Deus Ex, you WILL love this game. I recommend the official patch (1.2) and the Wesp's unofficial patch (whtever version it is) WITHOUT the additional tweaks (you can opt out of them during install). You can try out the additional tweaks on you're 2nd and 3rd playthroughs and trust me, there will be 2nd and 3rd playthroughs. Being a Malkavian is like a whole different game in and of itself. (Sorry for no patch links, dont have any on me!)
Operation Flashpoint / ARMA (the old or the new ones) - an oldie, but with mods, will tax even modern systems. Havent played the new ones but heard some of them are shit, some are good, so look around for reviews.

Crysis - a good way to test your machine, but also a great shooter with significant tactical/stealth vibe, if you feel like playing it that way. I once ghosted the first level. Hardest difficulty is suggested because it's piss easy otherwise if you use your brain while playing it. :)
Also +1 for Cryostasis, FEAR, Riddick: Dark Athena and STALKER.

Bioshock's DRM is pretty much the definition of stuff he doesn't want. Even I won't touch that thing with a barge pole.
Check out S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl and Metro 2033, two very atmospheric first-person games.
I haven't got around to playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent yet myself, but it's cheap and it's from the makers of Penumbra, so you might want to check that out.
Trine is also awesome (and totally DRM free IIRC, though I have the Steam version), even though it's nothing at all like the games you mentioned.
A lot of people liked FEAR. I was a little underwhelmed myself, I kept feeling like it was trying to do horror but was somehow too cliché and predictable, but your mileage will probably vary. I also hate games that only let you carry two guns and make you constantly drop them and swap them.

s.t.a.l.k.e.r looks like a great choice. I'll definitely be giving that one a try.
