Recommend me some relatively modern PC games... - by lost_soul

Mirror's Edge is a great game built around the idea of avoiding hostile people - although it does it in a completely different way from Thief. It also has a likeable, individual art direction (cheerful and IKEAish) and a decent story.
NecroVisioN is the best casual FPS I have played since Painkiller (it was made by some of the same people). It is so damn enthusiastic. It proceeds from the bayonets, tanks and zombie-filled trenches of World War One to the exciting world of gigantic mechanical scorpions, a talking necromantic mechanical hand that shoots fireballs, vampire assault rifles, dragon-riding and ultimately taking on Satan. The protagonist is, of course, a transparent Bruce Campbell ripoff. So, yeah, that kind of game.

Prize for the person who covertly gets lost_soul to install a game with the most draconian DRM.

I'll second Melan's NecroVision rec. Eva bought it for me a year or so ago and it was a blast. I need to get that expansion still.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Dark Messiah. It's a fantastically immersive game. You can play as a thiefy assassin and there are rope arrows.

I've never heard of NecroVision before but I watched a couple of gameplay videos and it does indeed look like fun. :)

Necrovision feels like it's put together with duct tape at places, but it can be great fun. Sprinting like a mad man and ripping Nazis apart with a knife+pistol combo is simply cathartic, and just feels right, man.

...ripping Nazis apart...
Isn't that a WW1 themed game?
Pemptus on 16/7/2011 at 21:41
Oh yeah, that it is, I kinda remembered it as a WW2 shooter for some reason.

I recently got and installed Windows 7 and I am interested in some modern (post 2006) cheap PC games.
No. you're interested in DX10/11 only PC games. Since there's nothing stopping you from playing, say, FEAR 3 on the XP.

The only fun you'll have with NecroVision is having a good book, because the loading times were just inhumane in that one.
